Do professional thieves exist?

You know, like the guys in the movies "Heat" or "Ocean's Eleven". Sophisticated, professional thieves with elaborate plans. Are they real?

I'm sure there are some but they're probably not witty, handsome, wise-crackin friends that shouldn't be hated because they're only stealing from evil business moguls.

I have a cousin that I haven't seen in probably 15 years who was a professional thief. He left home at 16, got arrested at 24, served 6 years in prison, and went right back to it when he got out. Last I heard he got busted again and was serving more time.

Yes they exist but don't think of them as evil supervillains.
Truly intelligent and brilliant people are either honest or into high spheres, mostly hacking and monetary fraud.
Those who physically interact with goods and money to steal them aren't the brightest.

Do professional thieves have company sponsorships or endorsements? They might not be entirely honest about their relationships with sponsoring manufacturers, but I'm convinced a lot of TB members aren't either!

I think having a handful of Batman style super villains that occasionally interrupted your tv or monitor at work to tell everyone simultaneously about what they are up to would be pretty cool.

There is an area here where a lot of people go to cycle and jog. The parking log is a known target for thieves. One day my wife put her purse in the trunk of her car before pulling out of our garage.
She went to this spot, had a jog then drove home. When she opened her trunk the purse was gone. Not a scratch or mark on the car. The cops told her that the thieves have electronic devices that open car doors and trunks that can be opened with a remote.
Sound professional to me. In the hour before she discovered the theft and called our credit card company and bank they already ran up a lot of charges at various Bay Area locations. More than one person must have had her cards.

The Lufthansa heist. Tommy and Carbone were gonna grab the outside guard and make him get us inside the front door. Frenchy and Joe Buddha had to round up the workers. Johnny Roast Beef had to keep them all tied up and away from the alarms. Even Stacks Edwards got in on it - he used to hang around the lounge and play guitar - everybody loved Stacks. What he was supposed to do was steal the panel truck, and afterwards, compact it by a friend of ours out in Jersey. Only Maury was driving us nuts. Just because he set this up, he felt he could bust Jimmy's balls for an advance on the money we were gonna steal. He didn't mean anything by it, it's just, that's just the way he was.
