do schecters suck?

would a schecter c4 be a good buy for a lower-intermediate player for right at $500?
Too much.

Schecters are frequently deep discounted on Amazon and elsewhere.

If you really want a Schecter, you can do better on the price.

Schecters are out of the same Asian guitar mills as everyone else uses and the quality is about on-par with everyone else, except that Schecter does give them a once-over in the US before shipping them -- though I've seen them overlook some pretty glaring problems.

I had a C4 Elite that looked and played very nice. It was my first bass and I sold it after a year because I wanted to get into 5strings. I'd say they're on par with Fenders in the same price bracket. Maybe a little more consistency from bass to bass than the Fender line. Unfortunately they don't hold their value very well. So if you pay $500 for it new and want to flip it you'll only get about $200 or maybe only $100 on a trade up at GC. Not really a reflection of the quality of the bass it's just how the market is these days. Try looking for a used one in good condition you might save a lot of money.
