Change up the strings and you can get a little more sustain. The trade off for the decreased sustain on a mustang is that it is growlier than most any P bass. Used one for a half a year while I was resting a left arm injury.

Although my main bass is a Rickenbacker stereo 1973, I originally asked for a fender PB but the store had sold out. My Danelectro : I traded it in in Stuttgart while on tour in Germany in 1972 almost 40 years later I found a replacement Dano on Ebay here in U.K.and a few months later, I bought a Squier Affinity Fender Precision bass and I can assure you that, unlike its matching Strat equivalent, it does not have through the body stringing. It is many years since I saw a real live Mustang guitar or bass. I have my instruments and equipment etc. on my website. The bass rig is 2 x 2 x 15" cabinets with Altec 421 8h bass speakers which I designed and built in the mid 70s. My name is Arthur Strand and although I worked as a bassist for a decade full-time including 20% directly on U.S.Army & Air-force bases in Germany, I now play guitars and Lute music. I have written 180 songs and did everything as a bass player could possibly do except tour the States. Michael, you are welcome to contact me through my website www.escutcheonmedia.com

I know the Fender mustangs do, but do the Squiers? I only care because i've heard that it may increase the sustain a little bit, which isn't the greatest on a mustang because it's a short scale.

It's a matter of scale
I own a 28,60" 2006 Fender Precision jr. and it's a stringthru
I once owned a Squier Mickey Way Mustang and, yes, it's a stringthru one

I've got an AXL viola bass and although a 30" it's no stringthru

Cheers,
Wallace

For what it's worth I don't think there is any noticeable change in sustain with through-body stringing. I have strung both ways with a Yamaha BB424 and a 2012 AmStd Fender Jazz and can't tell the difference.

So my view would be don't let it influence your decision if you have seen a bass that you like at the right price.

I fully expect to be shot down by the usual suspects who can hear the difference between a maple and rosewood fingerboard at 20 paces whilst blindfolded...

haha!

I have played both and I do not see 500 dollars more value in the fender. I bought the VM for 220 with coupon. That is a lot of bass for the money. It has a nice fit and finish. Sound is right on. It is over all just a great bass.

If any one can tell me were that other 500 bucks is on the fender it would be appreciated.
