Do Stingrays have the infamous dead spot??

I think some people think a dead note is an obvious lack of sustain, but a lot of times, and as it sounds like on your videos, the fundamental dies quicker while the harmonic continues to ring.

Well, that's what a dead note is: the fundamental is sucked by the material entering in resonance with the string, and only the harmonics subsist. Thus, giving the fundamental a real poor sustain.

Glad to, if you come clean my house.

Seriously, though, you'll just have to trust me. The answer: some do and some don't. Same with Fenders and many others. If it bothers you--would bother me, too--why would you buy one that does?

It's so funny how NOBODY who claims not having deadspots is willing to proove it with a clear audio/video recording. Yet you're asking me to clean your house? If that's a joke, it's really really funny.

When did I say that deadspots bothered me already?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes! I’ve had my ‘82 StingRay (w/ rosewood fretboard) for 33 years and never noticed the dead spots on the G string until just recently. I’ve tried many different string types, materials, and brands, all to no avail. I thought maybe the G poles in the pickup were dying (if that’s even possible), so I was going to put an Aguilar pickup on it, but from all the TB comments (and some common sense) that’s probably not the answer. I also had a 2010 StingRay Classic, and a 2001 StingRay 5-string, both with Maple neck/fretboard. Neither of those had those issues. I recently purchased the new limited production Short Scale Starry Night USA model. Other than getting used to playing it, and dialing in the perfect sound, I’ve had zero issues with dead spots.

In my experience, Singrays DO have a quiet G string. But I have found that it can be eliminated.

I once had an SR classic that I string with flats and the quiet G went away. I also have a Sub 5 that has an SD bassline PUP in it and it has a screaming G string.

It might seem like alchmey but to me it feels like the magnetic pull of the PUP on the G string may be part of the problem. Try rasing the PUP on your SR and playing the G string up high. THe PUP literallyt pulls the string out of tune if it is not set pretty low. Hence flats help as do different pickups.

This is just my experience. YMMV

All 5 of my StingRays have flats. I have not noticed any dead spots. You might be onto something.

At some point I accidentally bought a set of flats and put it on one of my music man bass guitars. Ever since that experience, every music man I have ever owned has had flats. Although currently I only have a Caprice, I have owned at least 10 other music man bass guitars over the years and flatwound strings have always been the go-to.

To me, the combo of StingRays and flats is like a PBass with flats. Some things are just meant to be.:headphone:

Many people claim that on a Stingray, the entire G string is weak in comparison to the other strings. That was my experience when I had Stingrays.
You are so right , my MM SR HH has a very crummy G string , it’s the runt of my collection, it’s getting sold , I tried to live with it but it bugs me to much , the notes all over the G string don’t sustain much. Wish MM would fix it.
