Yup, back in their hey day they were Heavy Metal. They were credited with inventing the genre, according to my peers and what I heard. Along with Led Zep and Black Sabbath was Deep Purple and Robin Trower, I think both now considered to be strongly in the "hard rock" category.Go back to 1970. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were it. There was no such thing as classic rock, and the term 'Heavy Metal' was brand new.
So for me there is a definite distinction between "Heavy Metal" and "Metal". Frankly I don't consider Black Sabbath to be "Metal" either although most people I suppose do. The first metal bands I became aware of were probably Judas Priest or Metallica. That was all around 1983 to 1985 for me.
