I would say Im good at what I mainly do - praise and worship/rock music. After ten years, I would hope I would be good at it by now. But I would rather describe my playing as "solid" or "tasteful" rather than good - thats just the bass player way.

If I was slapping or playing jazz, then I wouldn't class myself as good - not even passable. I know my current limits.

I say the same for myself, but I'm really shy at first when playing with unfamilliar musicians, and tend to play uhh, worse than usual, but usually that changes after a couple of practices..

I had a teacher once who told me that he considered "proficiency" to be equal to a professional level of playing ability. So when we elevate proficiency to that level, how GOOD must you be to call yourself "good"?

Actually, with this teacher, "pretty good" meant "less than proficient". He saw "good" as someone who shows some promise, but isn't to that pro level yet. Or even somebody that's proficient in one area, but totally lacks in another, bringing the total package down. Like being really fast, but not knowing how to sit in a pocket. My teacher would say that person was "very good"... but not proficient.

I was very pleased the day that I overheard him telling someone that I was "very proficient"... It's a high compliment from him.

I consider myself better than competant. I can keep the groove down well, and know just enough to make sure it's a little interesting.

Don't go putting me on any "next Jaco" list, though.:D
This is me now.

Now when I was gigging regularly and practicing a couple of hours a night, I would say I was fairly monstrous.

But with kids since '93 and a job that has twelve hour night shifts since '98, I don't think I'll get to that level again.

I don't think I suck now. But I'm not going to get up and take a solo these days.
