Simply...no.

Breaking a string while tuning means you're doing it wrong.

Breaking a string at a gig is certainly undesirable, but in almost 40 years of playing, it's only happened to me ONCE.

Only on my double bass. When those things go.... watch out. Never had it happen, but I'm going to find a nice, healthy tree to knock on now.

I think there's a celebrated case of a violinist going to see Sigmund Freud in Vienna about his fear of breaking strings. Apparently ol' Sig told him to 'Shuddup and play ya violin!'

Do you get nervous when tuning or restringing that the string might break

- Bass guitar strings? Nah, not really. Not unless I'm doing something that's... sketchy; like winding the speaking part of a flat wound E string around a skinny tuner post...
- Guitar strings? Yeah; especially light gauge strings - or the light strings of any gauge. I have 50+ years of experience with bass guitar strings; I'm still pretty much a novice when it comes to guitars...
- Mandolins and banjos? Oh HELL yes. Those spider silk/dental floss things? I can break them just taking them out of the package. The ones on my '63 long scale ODE banjo have needed replacing for years; I'm still trying to work up the courage. Do you have any idea how hard it is to even find long scale banjo strings?!? If I can find a couple of new sets, I might try changing them. But, I know I'll break at least a couple when I do...

I broke one forty-one years ago during a gig, while slapping, and I was only just a beginner at the time.
None since then.

No, I don't fear it at all.
Not on my guitars either, at least not when stringing up a guitar. That's never happened to me with any guitar or bass.

And no need for fear. If you break a string, it won't likely injure or kill you.

while stringing guitars over the last 50+ years, a couple times i've had strings slip and whack me in the face. it wasn't a big deal, and i wear glasses, so my eyes were safe. perhaps if afraid when stringing, goggles or glasses would be useful.
