Do You Keep a Guitar in Your House for Visitors?

I read your post and it made me sad for the Martin I too have sitting in a case untouched. Like the sword of Excalibur, someday a worthy guitarist player will come and pull it from its case.

You should be the "worthy" guitar player. Get that thing out and use it. Learn chords, voicengs, arpeggios, and a few songs that you can sing along with. It will ultimately make you a better musician. Which translates you being a better bass player. A Martin guitar is a terrible thing to waste!

Actually, the way I play, it would be more accurate to say I keep a guitar in my house to scare away visitors.

I voted "no" because I don't keep specific instruments around for public use - if you wanna play anything of mine, ask and I'll let you know if I think you're not a risk.

And I really don't have many friends who play. I'm usually the one who goes over places and picks up the guitar.

Yep. I don’t play guitar at all, so aside from picking it up once every few months to mess around, I keep a $40 Peavey Strat on my stand in case anyone wants to use it. It doesn’t take up much room and a buddy gave me a little combo to use with it that fits right on my bookshelf.

If anyone ever actually came to my house, which guitar I would let them use would depend on how much I like them. My best friends get to play my baby, my 1990 Rickenbacker 330. Lesser mortals can play the 1985 Ibanez Roadstar II RS110 that my father left behind when he passed away. The electronics suck, but it plays surprisingly well. I also have a 1996(?) Yamaha F310 acoustic that sounds lovely at her age, also left behind.

Nobody ever comes to my house, though.

I keep my Ibanez acoustic on a stand next to the dinner table so I can play along while my wife watches “The Voice” which is quickly be followed by an evil stare and the word “really?”. I’m pretty sure she’s replaying that John Belushi scene in her head every time I pick that guitar up.

I’m a lefty bass and guitar player, but I keep a righty Squier Strat around for visitors (I actually have a righty acoustic, too, but my bandmate’s been ‘borrowing’ it for years - honestly, I’m just glad it’s getting played). I’d like to have a righty bass, too, but I’ve never happened upon a reasonable deal and had the spare funds at the same time.

I have a guitar or two, but I have half dozen ukes! George Harrison wrote many of his songs on a uke and always carried one. He also had friends in and they would all sit around jamming on ukes.

A MIM FSR strat, an e-drum kit, several percussion instruments and a host of vocal and instrument mics. Helpful when unplanned studio work comes up.

I don't keep anything in my house "for friends" except for some spare towels and a fold-out daybed with air mattress.

I do keep four or five guitars in my house...but they're for me. If a friend came over and wanted to play them, I'd happily say yes...but that almost never happens.

I have a cheap acoustic waiting for me to wood-dork it into good repair. If I get that tuit round, it would be such a guitar. Right now, it's just a broken guitar shaped object.

Yes, I do. Three acoustics, eight or ten electrics. One of the acoustics is tuned down a half step as is a couple of the electrics. When learning a tune on bass or saxophone, I always learned to play it on the guitar as well.

I also have a set of drums, a keyboard, and a PA. The drums are there for others to play as I know I don't have what it takes to be a drummer.

I keep guitars everywhere in the house in case the urge strikes me to play. When watching tv with my wife, I usually have an electric in my hands but not plugged in.
