Do you LOVE your bass tone?

This has been working for me lately. A mini stereo rig and a stereo wired jazz bass...

and...I started this thread a long time ago. For me..I do chase my tone quite a bit.

There are a couple of tones I prefer, depending on the bass and the situation. At the moment it's a lot less 'rock' than I'd typically go for in the past. Probably because I've changed to fretless!

Playing through my Genz Bnez I'm very happy with my tone. Playing at church through IEM's I hate the sound/tone...too sterile.

Do you LOVE your bass tone? Do you feel joy, elation, or bliss due to the voice of the notes as you lay down a sweet groove?

Or do you not really care? Maybe it's the notes, not the tone that matters.

Or maybe you aren't happy with your tone, and you can't find that tone in your head that you are yearning for.

When I was in studio yes. After mix,Not at all!
Usually my first rerecords had much better tone but gently the band went into electronic style and my bass sound soo bad.

At rehearsals yes. Live is such a gamble with different rooms that my stage tone I do love, out front, who knows...LOL!

Bass alone sucks whatever the gear.

Lets be honest, only Bass Players like Bass Tone. Bass is an ensemble instrument, with a group it is fantastic, by itself it is just boom thud thud boom.
Same as drums by themselves.

Yup. I pretty much always sound like me but when I put Agi's in my alder Yammy it was all over. Sweet buttery goodness. The other basses are just changes of pace.

I just got a 50 watt tube head for winery gigs; it's also a pretty righteous practice rig for the pandemic!

I have moments in time where the stars align and I love it.

There are lots of variables. Particular bass. Pickups. Strings. Signal chain. String age. Humidity - no seriously. Dial of tone for the practice.

There Are times when I think - this is Awesome. This is It.

But there are lots of other times that are - underwhelming.

I have love / hate changing views on lots of stuff. It is my curse.

On any given practice day, I May insert an effect into the chain - and think - oh, yeah, that's the ticket.

Next day - nah, get that out of there.

Flux, unfortunately. Not by choice.

Through the combination of an Ampeg amp, Darkglass preamp and compressor; I have found the tone I have always heard in my head. I do elicit joy every time I lay down notes upon a groove. I am grateful to my wife, who helped me acquire said pieces of gear. Now all that's left to do is practice!!
