Do you need FX pedals for rock?

No fx pedals for my first rock gig Friday night. I did crank the gain and boost the mids a bit. Don't think I'm going to run out and buy a buch of pedals at this point. Maybe in the future. For right now I'm going to concentrate on the 49 cover songs that I need to know, and work on my vocal parts.

Need? I'd say no. I've played enough of that material and never felt I "Needed" effects or pedals. That said a pedal would probably enhance your sound in some songs, help you Fill more space, cut thru, and give you another avenue for creativity. Lately I've been turning up the drive and blend on my sansamp bassdi and liking that. I don't think my bend mates know or care I'm doing that, and they've never asked me to use effects or tell me I'm missing some sound.
