I do not. I am what you might call a casual Jaco fan. I like his music, but I don't obsess over it. Over the years I've collected a few CDs/records/cassettes with him on bass, including "Word Of Mouth", "Hejira", "Bright Size Life", "Heavy Weather", "Night Passage", and "8:30". My favorite is "Word of Mouth", because it really showcases his writing and arranging chops.

A few years ago I bought a copy of "The Essential Jaco Pastorius", which contains almost every song from "Jaco Pastorius", so the most likely thing now would be for me to just download the songs that didn't make it to "Essential".

I bought that cassette back in the early 90s after reading about Jaco in Bass Player magazine. For being a rock guy, I remember loving it. I recently bought is again remastered on CD. Just a great record.
On a side note, thinking back...Bass Player magazine was such an influence on me as a young bassist. I was turned on to so many great players and incredible music that I would have never thought to check out.

+1. John Goldsby's "The Tradition" column alone had a huge influence on my CD collection.

The single most influential album on my musical career!!!! Compositionally it is legendary!!! And his playing on this album changed the world! If you play bass and you dont think Jaco has influenced you in some kinda way......you my friend are mistaken

Oops - wrong thread. Yes, I bought it when I was around seventeen. "Portrait Of Tracy" knocked me out. It's one of the few "bassist" albums that I like - and it effectively showcases the various sides of Jaco's playing, from sweet and melodic to jazzy to straight up funky. A great and uncluttered album.

That's a really good call. Herbie is brilliant throughout, isn't he? There is so much great ensemble playing on this album. TBers sometimes miss Jaco's compositional talent.

And his arranging. Kuru/Speak Like a Child is amazing, as is Opus Pocus. Those two, along with Continuum, are my favourites on the album.
