Do you play differently in a trio?

When I play with my trio, I do feel more compelled to help the melody out. I find myself using more leading tones, turnarounds, root fifth and root octaves, etc. While with the four piece band I tend to just provide the root and an occasional run here and there. I should say the four piece has two very loud guitarist and both tend to overplay. I love playing both for different reasons.

When I said "only pitched instrument" I meant that the drummer ain't outlining the harmony behind the solo.

I think it's going to end up taking a bit of time to get used to I suppose. Looking forward to it though.

A Trio is a lot of fun! You have more freedom. As you can see from the varied responses you CAN add more notes or change your tone but you really don't have to. It's all about freedom baby!
