A compressor is capable of performing several different roles. It isn't just about keeping playing dynamics in line. I do use mine to tame my Q-tron and my atrocious slap technique but I mainly enjoy the sound it gives my bass. It's subtle enough but the effect is above and beyond what technique alone can do.
So, the answer is yes, I practice with compression. However, I practiced the first 20 years without it.
