The Joe Dart is a real missed opportunity. Why have a single volume knob. Just have no knobs, it would be such a better product. As we can see here, most people don't use the volume knob they have on their various basses.I'm finding I like the volume on my new passive Joe Dart backed off a bit, but usually have volume wide open on my Sabre fretless and passive fretless jazz.
Others, like me, never turn the volume on their bass fully up, so the tone does not get overly bright.Rolling your volume pot back will attenuate some high frequencies. Thus some players advocate the use of a treble bleed circuit. See Stewmac or Seymour Duncan for a more in depth discussion.
One thing I do is play with a light touch on the strings. I have my master set so that with a light touch, everything sounds at a good level. Then, if I need more volume, I just pluck the string harder. If I need my bass to actually growl, then I'll really dig into the strings over my bridge pickup and it will growl all night long. But playing at "normal levels" with a light touch allows me to both go a bit quieter by plucking the strings even more lightly if I need to, as well as play louder by just plucking the strings harder.I don't if this should be in "Basses" or "Pickups", but here goes:
I gig with two basses, one active and one passive. I used to play with my bass' volume control all the way up all the time.
But in our current band the drummer can go back and forth from brushes and all kinds of mutes to big stick banging. So I really have to ride my volume knob.
I feel like my bass is losing its edge and presence when I turn it down. Is it? Or am I imagining this?
