Do you steal music???

I can only think of one album I've downloaded completely. Every once and awhile I'll feel like listenign to a particular song I heard the radio or somethign someone suggested I check out, but those are scattered instances. The vast majority of my music now is bought legit in cd form. I'm even buying several fo the cd's burned off my friends back in the day.

Posessing an illicit copy of a recorded work is clearly not stealing. In my case (as I expect is the case for most downloaded music) people would not be going and buying the music, except that this free option exists so why bother. It's more the case that I am only interested in posessing this music at a price at or near zero. No revenue is being lost. They could BOOST revenues if they were willing to sell me (and many, many,many, many others) the mp3 version at a price near zero.

Opportunity cost lost is not theft anyway, even if you somehow believed they were losing opportunity cost and I really would have bought all those albums, and software.

One can rationalize anything. Let's not get hung up on specific words...stealing, theft. Semantics can be fun. Are you enjoying the fruits of someone else's efforts without compensating them?

Just thought of a good example. Why should I pay to see a movie? It's showing anyway. The theatre is not losing anything, it's running regardless of whether or not I pay. Ah, but SOMEONE has to pay or it won't be running at all. If no one pays for the music, it won't be out there to steal/download/share/whatever.

A lot of you guys seem to think that we're not capable of realizing we're stealing, or it's ramifications. That if we're called on it, we'll be like "Damn, we're actually stealing!" and change.

It's a spade. I'm stealing. It's against the law and I'm raping artists wallets.

Quick question: how much to galleries pay artists to show their work? What about all the lost oppertunity cost of not only showing their art to people who will pay them for their art? Aren't these museums and galleries stealing from the artist? I mean, I can look at their art for free. FREE! And often not have to even pay the gallery.

Imagine my audacity.

That's all I'm saying, call a spade a spade and be honest about it. I'm not asking anyone to change anything, nor am I judging anyone. Just call a spade a spade like you just did, that's all I ask.

I can't believe anyone is even replying to this (very interesting but beat to death) thread. Let's hope Talkbass doesn't get a subpoena over it. :)

I'm totally with you though, Brendan. Even though I would never never download music in a bazillion years. Hayull naw.

The only music i have that is downloaded(which consists probably of 5% of my Ipod) is music that i have downloaded from an artists site. Ithink its fine because im pretty sure it is legit if they post mp3's on their sites and it says *Right click to download* but besides that i don't anymore. about 4 years ago i had over 5,000 songs d/l but they are all gone and only the ones from websites.

While major bands lost a few dollars due to Napster, many more grew because of it. One such example is Dispatch, who rose to their jamband fame because of filesharing and actually promoted Napster at their shows. I support the idea of filesharing for its intended purposes only: sampling.

Do I steal music? I don't consider it stealing. If I like what I hear, I buy the CD, if I don't like what I hear, I delete it. Simple as that. And I still wear my Napster shirt proudly.

Thats me for the most part!

I download to listen to new bands people tell me about. I have saved tons of money that would have been wasted on bands that sucked. Yea, they might have had one or two good songs on the CD and the rest was garbage. Guess what? I don't buy their CD and I get rid of the crappy mp3. Maybe get the good songs when they have a "Greatest Hits" album.

If I do like them, I buy the CD. I like having the artwork and other info the CD has. Man I miss the old 33rpm vinyl albums. What artwork they had!

How many CD's do I buy a year?

20+ easy. Sometimes I will buy 6-8 at a time. I'm slowly rebuilding my cassette and vinyl collection on CD. I also normally buy used from my privately owned local Bookman's store unless its something I really want right now.

Same for me. I'd say around 30-40 here. I buy a bunch used, but I buy new releases the Tuesday they're out if I can afford them. If not, I wait a week or two. I just bought a Billy Sheehan album, Steve Vai, Chris Cornell, Dave Weiner AND the new Helmet album in a course of three days.

I think this pretty much sums up the situation. The business has changed. Its happened before and will happen again. Is it making it hard for musicians? Sure is. No doubt about that. I think the whole downloading music thing has had a negative impact on both labels and the artists. Is it going to change back any time soon? Yeah right.

The market has evolved, and eventually, anybody who wants to keep afloat will have to evolve with it.
