Sports are entertainment for me. It's not entertaining to watch a season slowly descend into hell. If my team goes south, I still hope for the best, but I just stop watching that sport for the season.

Not really your team, then, are they? If you just jump ship when times are bad, I don't think you're really a fan of that team, just a fan of winning teams.
Naturally, my opinion is hugely biased. I spent a lot of saturdays during my childhood up at Cal's Memorial Stadium, watching the Bears lose. My family always went, even when we knew they were almost guaranteed to lose spectacularly, and never left early. Ever. I think it was a good experience, made it that much more sweet to win, and taught me how to deal with the fact that you can't always get what you want, and how to enjoy life even when that's the case.
Ironically, I've seen them less lately now that they're really good, due to being away from home.
maybe different for college teams at a school you went to,but the pros..meh......most teams are made up of hired guns who will play for who pays them,have no ties to the town,and no intention of staying one minute longer than the last payday.
time was the local sports stars worked at the mill in the off season,you knew them,their moms etc...you shared in the wins and losses because they were your pals..
..and really,how many fans with regular jobs can even afford to take the kids out to the games....how many of these guys have bailed on their fans because 5 million a year was not good enough....
you do get to be held for ransom by the owner,for a new stadium every few years or he'll threaten to move the team to the aleutians.....
and dont ya just love your winning team disintegrating when they all make their post championship salary demands.....
sports that you actually participate in are way more fun anyway.....the pros will win today lose tomorrow,or lose today,win next week.............and you can walk back in any time and see the same old same old.....only the names change

Hey man, I root for Denver teams myself. I never miss a Broncos or Nuggets game, even if they're at the bottom of the heap all year. However, I do lose interest in the Rocks and the Avs if they suck, especially if they're out of the playoff race. The Rocks have a way lately of trying to squeeze into the playoffs, so they hold my interest a little longer. But the Avs are not only pathetic, they are uninteresting as well. That front desk hasn't been the same since the Stanley Cup days. Where's the talent? Where's the coaching?
P.S. -- I NEVER root for an AFC West rival or a NL rival, no matter what. I DO like several teams in the NBA Western Conference, but I'll wait until the Nugs are out of it to start pulling for those.
I love this. If someone doesn't watch through the absolute crap, they aren't "real" fans. Look, feel free to watch whatever you want to, but please don't make assumptions about anyone else based on your viewing habits.
My NFL team sucks. They have for decades. There are a few high points here and there, but by and large they bite. I never stop being a fan of them. I just stop putting myself through the absolute frustration of watching them dismantle themselves in a season. You can still be a fan of a team and not watch them.
I like certain bands. When they release a crappy album, I don't force myself to listen to it so that I can be taught "how to deal with the fact that you can't always get what you want, and how to enjoy life even when that's the case."

If the Chargers are not undefeated and in first place, I don't watch. If they made it to the super bowl, I might watch, even if they weren't undefeated.

I hate this sense of entitlement that you deserve to win all the time. No, you're not a real fan, you just happen to be rooting for that team at the time because they're winning.
The band analogy doesn't work. Music isn't a competition, sports is.
Of course, I'm not big on pro sports or TV sports in general anyway, maybe that's the difference. Even the games when the bears did horribly, it was still a fun day out, especially with the marching bands and the general atmosphere. I guess it's just different attitudes about life in general.
This is great at summarizing why I love college sports but really don't give a damn about pro teams.

as both a bostonian and a englishman i'm used to watching my teams snatch defeat from the jaws of victory... repeatedly, and in the most painful ways.. however, that said, they've almost always been contenders as far back as i care to remember. or at least good enough to not be a complete write off (the 06/07 celtics not withstanding.. but then again i don't care for basketball).
That makes no sense what so ever. I don't think any team "deserves to win all the time" and have at no point made that assertion. That alone is probably enough for someone to assume that the rest of this post is off track, but to show you that I don't quit on everything when it sucks...
That's a very inaccurate statement. I can root (pull, whatever) for a team and not watch them...or are you saying that you lose your right to be a real fan when you miss a game because of a blackout?
Think harder.
I'm not sure how you've gleaned this out of my ability to change a channel when a team goes south, but I'm close to applauding the absurdity.

I am a die hard 49ers fan, and after the past 6 years or so, you have to be dedicated to watch them after opening day. I watch them to the bitter end and talk about back in the day with Montana, Young, Rice, Taylor....oh, for the good times.
I've also lived all over the country, some places long enough to form "second" favotire teams. Usually this is a nice perk, you can almost always atch one of your teams on Sunday on TV. If you were a fan, you wouldn't want my luck last year. Some of those other teams besides SF? Kansas City Chiefs, Seatle Seahawks, did those three teams win three games between them?
