The idea that twitter is useless as a whole is ridiculous. Have you followed any part of the the Arab Spring movement? That is one of many examples of use found by twitter users.
My band got priority booking in one of the best clubs in town because my buddy hit a nerve with the owner exchanging jokes on twitter as another.
I use it as a way of letting people know when I've posted something new on one of my sites. Whether that really means anything, works well, or benefits anyone is quite open to debate.But it's free, and I get a new "follower" or two every week.
I also use it as a news headline reader service. I get the headlines from the sources that would interest me most, international media outlets and writers, as well as news they retweet from their more obscure and independent sources. This way I hear what's going on in Syria (for example) from the people of Syria, and not all of it through a corporate/national propaganda filter--and biases are balanced out.

It clear that not everyone on here understands the variety of ways Twitter can be used. I'm similar to Bongo in that I follow a lot of news. I used to read a good deal of newspaper, but since I started using Twitter I haven't picked up a single one. Yes, there are the microbloggers who will tweet a lot about things that aren't very important but I've never seen anything like that on my feed. You just have to know what kind of content you want to see.
I just finally caved and joined the fb cuz I wanted to link my bass covers on youtube. I'm not familiar with the twitters. These interwebs are sucking my soul!
It's fun, you get like 250 characters, and you can tweet your celebrities and friends and things and some tweet back..and yeah, just try it. By the way, give me more gold to sig..please.
Constraint breeds creativity. Honestly, I would like Facebook to scale back a bit in some regards.

That aside I don't care about the mundane things people do in their lives. I however like reading the tweets the pop up on Reddit for the sake of laughter from time to time.

I'm on twitter (@gormandizerjazz). I mostly follow musicians I like, sportswriters that cover my favorite teams and comedians. Its a great way to get information very quickly. For example, as the new of the shooting in Colorado was breaking today, people were retweeting things said by people who were actually in the theatre. Probably a lot more reliable source than anything CNN or Fox had.
