Do You Use Effects Pedals?

right, heres my bit:
i use chorus.
not very often.
but i use it, it just helps to cut through and make the bass more a solo instrament and less of a 'dum dum dum' instrament.
though i seem to be using it less and less.
the odd FX pedal is alright but i dont like people who have some huge pedal board with an EQ, chorus, delay, three different types of distortion, envelope filter, wah, auto wah, another EQ with different settings, volume pedal, compressor, sustainer, pedal tuner, when they only ever use the tuner.
i saw a band play in some little club and the bassist had 20 odd pedals and none of the lights were on the whole gig
(shoved my way to the front to check out the bassists gear), apart from the tuner inbetween 2 of thier songs.
pedals are only really worth it for two situations: you use it all the time. OR your a soloist and need something to cut through and draw the attention to you and away from the geetard.

I agree with this. I bought a ME50B which is a nice multi to get you acquainted with Bass FX. The Zoom B2 is another great one. I am going to sell it now though. What I found is that it was fun to play with on it's own and makes some crazy sounds during rehearsal but alot of the sounds make the bass sound muddy or disappear with the band. That being said, if you play in a band like Tool or NIN, I could see using them alot. I could see stepping on it occasionally and using the effects tastefully but it really is not enough of a difference to even bring it along. I just could not find a way to make them useful enough to justify lugging it around. The "Big Pedalboard you never step on" syndrome. Now, I just use a Tuner and an Octave pedal for change of sound every once in a while.
I use: Compression, Overdrive, Chorus, Flanger, Octave, Pitch Shift/detune, Auto-Wah - the first 2 constantly; the rest sparingly.
Necessary? Of course not. Useful? Definitely.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but thought it's worth a chime in. Since the mid-00s I started dabbling with pedals and eventually amassed quite a collection. A few yrs back in was running two pedal boards at a gig. But as of late I've become disillusioned with them and I've slowly started to sell them off. I'm down to about 8 pedals now and still, I don't feel that I need them apart from the tuner. My best, most clear, onstage sound is always the pure sound from bass to amp.
I like using some death killer distortion for noise and feedback frenzy, for this purpose my Boss MT-2 is perfect, I also use a EHX Tubezipper soly for it's overdrive/fuzz effect that I blend with clean sound to obtain an overdriven bass sound, I use a Boss LS-2 to do this job. Sometimes I use some phaser too, my EHX Small Stone Nano, which I too mix with clean sound, does this job.
Beside these effects I use EHX Blackfinger as always on pedal for compression, a Boss FV-50H volume pedal to adjust volume in the middle of a song if needed as well as for sweeps and a MXR 10 Band EQ for boosting and cutting frequencies if I need a thicker or thinner sound for some reason in some parts.
To sum it all up, I use: Distortion, Overdrive, Phaser, Compression and EQ
Next on the list will be: A reverb/delay pedal, an organ simulator and a bit crusher.

Why is this question asked so often on this forum? Are there really that many people that don't get effects despite so many pro level players using them?? It blows my mind that this discussion is continuously brought up.

Isn't it kind of silly to ask this question in the effects forum ... are there ever similar questions in other forums? "Do you use a bass?" in the Basses forum, "Do you use an amp?" in the Amps forum?
