After mostly taking a short break from the Doctor of about 40 years or so, I've just finished catching up with the whole "new" Doctor Who canon from Ecclestone to now. It's taken me a few weeks. Still a big fan of the earlier stuff, too, especially Pertwee and Baker (some of the stuff in between Baker and Paul McGann's one off appearance, not so much).

David Tennant's stint was superb, as good as anything the show's ever done. I don't mind most of the Matt Smith stuff, he himself is a decent enough Doctor, but some of the most recent shows in this last series were noticeably... well, crap to be honest. Crimson Horror was a bit meh and Nightmare in Silver was just an embarrassment. Whoever scripted the kids' parts in the latter needs a new career. Just my opinion, of course. I did really like Cold War and the Bells of St John's, though.

On the companion side, he's had some good lookers, hasn't he? Rose, Martha, Amy, Clara. Not Donna, obviously. :D

I see the poll is closed.

paulie

And Tom Baker won, with Tennant coming in a very close second, and Matt Smith finishing a somewhat distant third.

I think that's a pretty accurate poll, if you checked Who fans worldwide.

I think Tennant was actually BEATING T. Baker for awhile, out in the world, but Tennant fever has died down a little.

But will it surge again with the 50th Anniversary Special? You never know. Many of the people who voted for him back then hadn't seen "Fright Night."

I also watched the Troughton story, "The Mind Robber" earlier tonight.

Whenever New Who starts to lose you, put in some time with Classic Who.

You'll soon realize the show has always had its weak and strong moments. Plus, wasn't RTD getting a bit lame with his "entire Universe in danger of collapsing," and "Rose/Donna/Whatever Companion is the most important person in all of creation" stories?

It's hard to be original and interesting, when so much has been done already. I, for one, will always give the benefit of the doubt, and watch, hoping for the best, and moving on if an episode is weak.

I think most people vote for the doctor they sort of "grew up" with. I'd go for Pertwee myself for that reason - I'm obviously just a few years older than a lot of the Baker voters. I don't necessarily think Pertwee was a better Doctor than Baker was, it's just more of a nostalgia thing.

I have only seen the new series and would vote for Tennant in a close race over Eccleston and Smith. Frankly this is likely the result of the fact that I've seen more episodes with Tennant than the other two, and I don't know if that choice will remain the same once Smith's run is finished. Eccleston didn't really have a chance since his run was so short and they waited until after he was gone to really focus on relationships with the companions.

As River Song might say, "Spoilers":

Don't click if you don't wanna know.

Thank God, it's about time! Hope they pick somebody good this time. As somebody said before you don't really know what your going to get. The quality of the acting, and the writing as well, comes and goes and it has always been like that. Personally I couldn't stand Smith, to much of a goofy woofy silly willy Doctor. I prefer the intensity of Ecclestion or tennant or the eccentricity of Baker.

Seems to be a lot of Banter about a female Doctor. Knowing the BBC that will probably be the case. I won't how I would feel about that until I've seen an episode to two to see how it works.

I love Doctor Who, but even though the stories and effects have generally been intense and well executed, the Doctors have been getting...goofier.
I like Eccelston because he seemed mad (crazy) and at war with himself. As if the humor was an attempt to not lose his mind. He always seemed just about to become unhinged. If he was instrumental and somewhat responsible for the destruction of millions, including his own people. I think there would be some madness.
Through the course of the last 2 docs, this has turned into clownishness.

I think the special with John Hurt will show the compete opposite end of the spectrum with a lot of darkness. But the next Doctor should bring back some of the moodiness and madness, I think. Hurt will be amazing because he is an amazing actor, but we all know this is a one-off.

Next Doctor: do you think they could bring back the guy who "thought" he was the doctor from last season? Remember this guy"?

That was on of the "fun" episodes, but I think he did a good job, and based on his other roles, I could imagine him doing a good job.
