Very well stated. I thought Tennant had some of that too, but I feel exactly the same way about it.
I love Doctor Who, but even though the stories and effects have generally been intense and well executed, the Doctors have been getting...goofier.
I like Eccelston because he seemed mad (crazy) and at war with himself. As if the humor was an attempt to now lose his mind. He always seemed just about to become unhinged. If he was instrumental and somewhat responsible for the destruction of millions, including his own people. I think there would be some madness.
Through the course of the last 2 docs, this has turned into clownishness.
I think the special with John Hurt will show the compete opposite end of the spectrum with a lot of darkness. But the next Doctor should bring back some of the moodiness and madness, I think. Hurt will be amazing because he is an amazing actor, but we all know this is a one-off.
Next Doctor: do you think they could bring back the guy who "thought" he was the doctor from last season? Remember this guy"?
That was on of the "fun" episodes, but I think he did a good job, and based on his other roles, I could imagine him doing a good job.

Better declare myself as a crumblie - i watched the originals on B&W telly from Hartnell right through - the recent reappearance of an Ice Warrior brought back memories of the back of our couch - they scared the wotsits out of me when I was a kid, them and The Yeti can't wait to see John Hurt and what I hope is the story attached

Ice Warriors, Sea Devils, Zygons, and the first reveal of Field Major Styre the Sontaran. That was the stuff of my nightmares.
Yep they knew how to scare the cr*p out of kids in them days, although "Blink" was probably one of the best pieces ever, especially given its genesis..
I think 'Blink' has been namedropped in this thread a few times. Possibly one of the finest hours of TV Sci-Fi ever.
The Governor
The second time I watched that episode of Dr.Who I was like "Holy Crap! That`s the dude who plays the Governor!.......and he`s a good guy here?"
I guess that goes to show that he`s a pretty good actor when you only think of him as a bad dude.

My theory on Hurt is he was the incarnation of the Doctor involved in the Time War - he destroyed Galifrey and locked it in the time seal, somehow regenerating but with the JH version trapped in the time seal and still "alive" - part of the fun of Dr Who especially in the off season is being able to come up with your own crackpot theory of what's coming next and why... Until someone shoots it down in flames "because...." so fire away guys, what do you think?

I think John Hurt is the doctor between McGann and Eccleston. That's the only regeneration we never got to see, so in terms of televisual continuity if nothing else, it makes sense.
