Doctor Who

I'm really looking forward to Peter Capaldi as The Doctor - he is an excellent actor, a lifelong fan boy, seems to be a genuinely nice guy and of course, he's Scottish 
I just finished season 7 because the second half just hit Netflix...I'm going to need to find and catch up on 8 ASAP.
There's more chance of Scotland qualifying for a World Cup than The Doc swearing.
When I was younger I couldn't get into Doctor Who--I knew some people really into it, but when I saw it, it just didn't' do anything for me--maybe it was the style of narrative, the serial nature of the stories or something like that.
I loved a lot of British shows--so it wasn't that.
The cheesy sets & costumes didn't turn me off (I've watched & enjoyed other shows & movies that were at least as cheesy)
then when the new version cam along some other people I know got me into it--and it was fun.
I still prefer the newer version to the older version, but have a better appreciation for the older version, as I saw some episodes I had never seen before (And some of the Doctors I hadn't seen before.
The poll closed before I could vote in it, but my favorite is Eccleston.
he brought an edge to the role with a sense of humour that fit well.
I loved his line in the two parter to end his time on the show-after saying "No" to the Daleks sveral times-he tells the Daleks he is going to rescue Rose, save the earth and wipe them out of the sky.
When they tell him he has no weapons, no defences & no plan he responds-
"Yeah, and doesn't that scare you to death"
And them seem to show fear.
Cool.

My favorite of the "classic" doctors is Jon Pertwee--he had a cool vibe to him.

Series 8 kicks off in 32 hours and 6 minutes here in the UK (Saturday 19-50 BST). When do you guys in the US get to see the first episode? I'm asking mainly so us Brits can be careful not to post spoilers for you guys.
I'm at my nephew's concert/show tomorrow night so it's recorded for me as well! Must avoid the thread after it airs!
Martin - I'd avoid media of any description until you've seen it. There'll be spoilers all over the place! Don't even turn the car radio on on your way home.

I was introduced to Doctor Who with Pertwee..he was before i was born but on canadian tv, they had reruns of the Pertwee years on a channel. It came on right before TMNT when i was like 11 (so 1989). the thing is...i didn't speak english then so i had no real idea what was going on (neither in TMNT but i knew words here and there and anyway no french channel was showing it so....) and to be honest i thought it looked very campy and kinda stupid. Still i always remembered Daleks.
My gf is british and a bit older than me so when i got with her she introduced me to the Tom baker years and all that. (though i think really when she watched it as a kid it was Colin Baker and Davison) and while i'd heard of the new Doctor Who and how good it supposedly was, i didn't start watching it until i was with her. By that time it was already Tennant's second season but I started a the "beginning" with Eccleston who i loved a lot (and i thought i'd hate Matt Smith but i also like him a lot too)
I'm a big fan of Withnail and I though so i find it a real shame that Mcgann never got more than one movie (though he played the doctor a lot on radio, in fact hsi doctor is the one who's been in the most stories ever, they just happened in books or on radio...). I was ecstatic when they made that like ten mins web episode with him changing into John Hurt last year.

I thought so too, very well done. My kids, 14 & 11, big fans of Tennant and Smith, as they were the first doctors they ever saw (me too, in fact), were impressed as well. Shows what good writing can do.

Demons run when a good man goes to war
I nodded in and out of sleep during it. NOT due to the show but because I'd been up before dawn (yawn). What I remember (first twenty minutes & last five), I enjoyed! I recorded it so I'll give it my full attention at a later date. I'm a 55 year old 3rd & 4th Doctor fan but really enjoy the reboot that began with the 9th. I thought I was going to quit watching after the 9th but here I am!
I've seen the previews/specials, etc. Has anyone else noticed the younger/newer generation of fans refer to him as THE DOCTOR, yet older/original fans, Capaldi included, still refer to him as DOCTOR WHO? I guess it's due to the reboot as well.
