Does a pedal like this exist?

Is there a pedal device that you'd put at the beginning of your chain that takes the input signal, regardless of strength, and outputs a consistent level/strength signal?

I've owned the C4, Tonebone, and I/O. I've used a pre pedal and a boost. And I appreciate the suggestion of setting up a multieffects unit with different profiles. If I am going to stomp something when I change my basses, I think I still prefer my I/O for that.

But while it looks like the OP solved the onstage problem with a Spark, I'm still curious about the actual initial question. Can we "level" output signals from varied input signals with pedalboard-friendly tech? It does sound like compression is one way to approach it, but I'd prefer just an output volume restrictor.

Does this exist? Do we have the science?

We are of the same mind. I’m not an electronics guy but it seems reasonable for a design to accept an input signal that varies but always forward that signal, uncolored, at a specific line level. Effectively boosting some signals and attenuating others. Doesn’t seem like rocket science. The pedal could have one control that defines the level of the output signal.

I don't think so. It seems like the task is accomplished by the various methods listed in the thread, so the need for it is satisfied.

As digital multi effects increase in quality and decrease in price it seems that you can buy one device and have it perform a lot of different functions. I'm not advocating digital effects specifically, just using that as an example.

It's technically a pretty difficult task. Different instruments output different levels at different frequencies, so the 'same level' may technically not be not what your ears think the same level is. Think of how a smiley face eq is likely to need a lot higher level to cut through than a mid-focused tone, and then try to imagine designing a thing that will just be able to output the same percieved volume to satisfy those, and a million other, conditions.

What about an outboard passive option? I’m thinking about making one of these pedals to tame the P (with Dimarzio Model Ps) before the compressor. I like the idea of a visual reference for each instrument.

Also considering a couple preset volume pads by using voltage dividers. At about 80% volume, the log pot is splitting the signal 50/50. A voltage divider is easy with two resistors high enough to avoid affecting tone. Around 250k ohms each. Could be onboard or a pedal.

EDIT: oomph is added later in the chain with the preamp. (In my case a SansAmp Programmable BDDI.) The options above are before compression.

On many active basses there is a trim pot on the pre-amp controlling the gain level from the pickups going into the pre. Besides that most basses do have a volume knob. I know not many people are aware but yes they do in fact exist on basses.

The trim pot on my active is maxed and it’s still not the loudest bass. I keep the bass and treble right at the center detent. The passive P needs the trim pot... (or preset pad)

But yeah, easy enough to turn the volume knob down. Just a pain if a live fade out is needed. Have to return to exact spot.
 
Using a pedal for this seems to me to be a largish hammer to crack a very modest nut. If I bring two basses, I adjust the volume control on the loudest one to match the maximum output of the quietest one, and adjust volume to taste on the amp. Job done.

That would almost work for me, but not for someone who constantly tweaks his/her volume knob during a show — with a huge disparity between, say, an active fretted and a passive fretless, our bass-brother/sister would still need something to even out the disparity beyond what the volume knobs on the individual instruments are capable of. Or as Garrett77 just pointed out, a fade out and I'm sure there are other reasons/situations; seems simple enough to return to the same spot on the pot, but in the heat of battle...

Stick a passive volume knob in a box (wait, hasn't EHX already done this? ;)), BUT with a two-channel (or more) switcher. The lower-level instrument goes in the channel without the pot, the hot-output instrument goes through the attenuator.

What works for you or me, doesn't necessarily work for other people's gear, playing style, situation.

Not everyone is rocking an active bass. Also, MY bass does NOT have a volume knob on it, at all — it's one of those ones that's played vertically, not semi-horizontally. All controls affecting my bass are pedal-based.


And for all the thread-punters spouting "adjust at the amp" — I haven't had to/been able to bring an amp to a gig for several years now. I'm lucky if I get a backline amp, it's mostly been DI.

I think it could exist, but not enough demand for applying the science to the tech to warrant putting the money, time and effort into achieving the goal on a mass-production basis given the other solutions in the thread, considered band-aid ones or not. What is a compressor but an "output volume restrictor"?

A combination of the current tech would do it: your output volume restrictor (an EHX Signal Pad perhaps?), a comp/limiter, and instrument switching and maybe some of the other ideas in the thread — put them all in the same box, you could have as many inputs as needed, each with its own volume control (passive/active switchable), and all routed through the comp/limiter. Boutique build, sure, but it'd work and not have to conform to mass-production quirks, short-cuts and constraints.





A simple volume pedal could work, although you need a good way to adjust it during instrument switches, if you can’t play a few notes and do it by ear.

I had a chance at a super-sale priced Visual Volume when I was first starting out. Didn't see the need for it on bass at the time, later regretted not getting it. Might mod my Dunlop DVP1XL...

Makes sense to me. See post above with link to Premier Guitar: 500k ohm log pot, foot switch, and an optional indicator LED. They describe how it can be used for live situations with just one guitar/bass as well. I imagine marking the preset spots for multiple basses.
 
@garrett77 Makes sense to me, too.

I did see your post about the PG DIY article, authored by Ben Fulton of Redwitch Pedals no less. Lots of smarty-pants in the comments section there, too. I was just adding to the the pot-in-box idea (Ben's DIY/EHX Signal Pad etc), by having two (or more) input jacks with switching — that way you don't have to unplug/plug-in when switching from one bass to another.

I've seen a few pedals that are at least partially marketed as being for switching between instruments and matching levels,
but with only one input.
Yet in some cases (orchestra pit or whatever) it may not be convenient to pull the plug at the instrument end and plug into the new instrument or you need to make the change as quick as possible (theatre show), etc...

If I needed to swap instruments, I'd want an all-in-one solution where I can leave the instruments plugged in ready to go and a stomp switch to toggle between two; or several stompers to activate whichever instrument is in use, relay switched whereby if you have four instruments and you're switching from #2 to #3, for instance, you simply stomp on sw#3 and it simultaneously deactivates the #2 channel while activating #3.

Switchable between active or passive, a mildly set compressor that lets playing-dynamics through...

So here's a question.

Is it better to boost the quiet instrument or cut the loud one?
Do you run the risk of treble loss by cutting? Or by the same token, do you run the risk of pushing your signal into distortion by boosting the signal before it even gets to the amp input gain stage?

Or am I overthinking this too much?

It just occurs to me because I have a Radial Bigshot I/O, which cuts the signal on input 2, so clearly they think that is better, BUT they also include a treble boost switch to compensate for tone loss.

So what's better? Boost or cut?
