There's this one thing that is totally jamming my brain. Needing a trans whitewashed '68 style with a Lollar PUP and a figured neck and maybe a DeTemple Ti bridge. Thinking it needs to be at least partly made from Silver Maple because of childhood treehouse mental baggage. Needs to have a rainfall maple pickguard because it looks cool. But I can't be sure if the guard needs to be blonde or orange tinted. I also am struggling with fingerboard. Maple or ebony? But definitely no dots on the neck. Tuners need to be light but have a pretty vintage style. So I need the economy to turn around for a lot of reasons, the chief one being that I need to earn enough for this bass so I can free up 70% of my brain power. So everybody wash your hands and wear a mask and send positive messages about the maple guard color. This is a challenging time for all of us but especially for me because of this heavyweight decision. This is like Atlas bowing under the weight of the earth. Blonde or orange? Orange or blonde?

No. I've worked in four music stores and managed two. I know what I need out of a bass. As someone noted above, I won't even need to plug it in.

What gives me anxiety is going into a music store with the usual pack of moron "customers" demoing guitars they will never buy at ear-shattering volumes.

I just get too excited i guess. Im not stage fright or anything so i actually like demoing bass at music stores. Especially cuz i know how to play and they wont expect that from most people so theyre always shocked and give me compliments

What makes me anxious, regarding both basses and amps, is the sheer number of choices/making the wrong choice. Having options is good, but so many options these days can induce some anxiety. It's like this with everything, TV's, cars, rifles, etc...

Sometimes if I see a bass on CL or Ebay that seems like an amazing deal I can become a little obsessive trying to interpret the photos and/seller’s description. I’ll keep clicking on the photos hoping for more detail...like when you keep going to the fridge even though you know there’s no turkey sandwich waiting for you in there.

As someone who sells on eBay, I can tell you- it DOES pay to check, over and over again. I will add to my description, if someone asks a particular question, and add photos of a certain part of the gear, if someone asks. Most sellers will answer your questions and send additional photos to you, if requested

Never had a problem with Smoke.

Stairway's a different story. But those days are long gone.

You won't hear either one nowadays in a music store. Which for me is great. For all I know the kids are playing...whatever shredfest BS they're playing...perfectly.

Does anyone else get incredibly anxious when shopping for a bass ? (Even online shopping) i just get online and look at basses and get so excited that it creates anxiety lmao. Like yea I have an anxiety disorder but still bahaha

You’re fine. You’re just excited with anticipation about something that you truly enjoy. You still have the child in you alive and well! Artists, regardless of what kind of artists, all have this in common. If the child in you was beat to you more than likely wouldn’t be playing bass, shopping for a bass, or talking talkbass here. Relax and enjoy.

No, not really. Most of the time when faced with a purchase, I have a pretty good idea what I want to buy and how much I’m will to pay. One exception, airline tickets purchased online drive me to the brink of insanity.

I don't like testing a bass in front of people. I'm noodling and not playing, so I know it doesn't sound great. I am also very conscious about trying out gear around other bass players. They can be a little judgmental

Easy 120 basses have come my way. I'll buy online without a care in the world and often don't even plug them in if buying face to face

In the last 30 years I've returned 1 bass.

I haven't had that many, but I've had a bunch, and that's exactly how I feel about it.

Hand you a bass and you'll play it.
No excuses about necks too thick/skinny, it's too heavy/light, fretboard too flat/rounded,doesn't have my tone etc.

Just do the job with the tools you have

40 years of playing and 400 basses later I do not. Presently down to just 5 basses and soon just 4. That's where I will stay. Getting new bass, it's fun but not as the first few I ever bought.
