Does anyone else get annoyed by playing to hard or buzzy playing?

It might be partly because Jamerson played with 1/2” high action in the higher frets. No rattle. I believe he dug in plenty like an upright player might.

I can hardly wait to hear the opinion on John Entwhistle and other percussive bassists. Yeah, I have a problem with 80-90% of demos being pop and slap, so I guess we can agree that we like some techniques better than others.

Motown probably not, but I like to have a 'sporty' setup with plenty of clank available then play with a light touch. Better to have it available and not use it than not have it up your sleeve when you need/want it, IMHO/IME.
I really like when people play aggressively any music. It sounds like power and energy to me. I feel like people focus on light touch a lot but not enough on how ones can have some power sound by hitting hard the strings.

It's pretty common and they are doing it intentionally.
It's a feel thing that a lot of experienced players and professionals do.
It's not necessarily aggressive. It's dynamics.
How is your bass setup? High action?
Do you play flats?
Single pickup?
It just may be your thing.
It's called an opinion.
If you have not done it yet, it might be instructive to seek out the isolated bass tracks by Jamerson, Bob Babbit and Carol Kaye to hear the range of Motown bass tones.

I don’t know. It’s their gig, their art. Now if it’s a matter of a bass not being set up properly, a bad EQ, or gain setting, that can be annoying.
Generally speaking, I don’t spend much time watching other bands, but when I do I’m drawn to the sound entire ensemble, more importantly to the arrangements. Of course that will eventually draw me to the bass and how well it makes the music sound logical.

This kid seems to be trolling. Trying to stir up crap for some reason.
Look up the threads he's started. Dig a bit and you see a pattern.
I see too much that looks like he's trying to stir stuff up for giggles or due an issue that needs help.
He gripes about mildly aggressive playing on this post then in another agrees that Geddy is a contender for "the Hendrix of bass". Huh?
... asks if anyone doesn't enjoy jaco... like that thread will turn out good.

he certainly is laying it on pretty thick at the moment ... and FWIW, he is a 16 y/o kid so that has to be factored in. I've been around here for a bit and folks like this mostly tend to come and go, but sometimes they are in earnest and hang around and become solid members. I guess we'll have to see what happens in this case.
I see what you mean. I do understand your point. Please hear me out. My intention is see others views on things. I am open minded to suggestions in the Jaco thread and have listened to him much more and have actually tried learning some of his bass lines. I've been playing bass for only 2 years, I haven't been able to meet more than a hand full of bass players and so I just want to know everyone's thoughts that's all

Like really what I mean is tone all the way up on a p bass and playing to hard for music like soul. My goal is not to rile anyone up. I promise. I don't want to make anyone angry on a platform that I joined to feel included. Thank you for your time. I hope you understand, in the future I'll word these threads better.
