Does anyone else get annoyed by playing to hard or buzzy playing?

I really like when people play aggressively any music. It sounds like power and energy to me. I feel like people focus on light touch a lot but not enough on how ones can have some power sound by hitting hard the strings.

it is very common for newer players in particular to play too hard. generally as they mature they learn they can achieve what they want with a lighter touch. sometimes it's a matter of the bass setup too. Some Motown has harder attack, but the strings were higher to compensate.

Fret buzz was very much a part of Squire’s sound. We had never heard anything like it when it came around (no isolated tracks back then). Were we as young bassists annoyed? More like totally amazed!

There is a huge difference between making a whole bunch of extraneous noise and clank because of incompetent technique and having sufficient mastery over those elements of the bass guitar voice to make music with them.

In answer to the thread question, no. John Wetton’s King Crimson era is one of my favorite sounds, and on the epic end to all that, “Starless”, he’s pummeling his P. The Stranglers’ JJ Burnel figures in there as well.
