Does anyone else hate this forum?

I was happy. I had a bass I liked. I also had an electric upright I could arco 3 chord slow songs if I had to. All was fine. Now I need to find a 1960's J, a fretless anything that mwahs nice, 13 diferent amp/cab combos for any situation, a nice FX setup I can use or not use depending on my situation, an acoustic 5 string, a custom so fancy no one even me can touch, I also need to find a $30 garage sale squire that sounds as good as your $3000 bass.

Honestly, I might pick up the old P-copy (that I hated) and push it through the house amp next week. Because I want it all. I want to play a bass that does nothing but what my fingers say. Then play something a 2 week amateur could make sing. I don't hate this site, but I find myself wanting more and more the more I see!!!! :D
Step away from the TB Classifieds, get off Craigslist and Ebay, no perusing Bass Central or the Low End......breathe and PUT THE CHARGE CARD DOWN! ;)

The best way to manage GAS is to gig. Frequently. Either you will gig so much you don't have time to post on TalkBass, or you will make enough to feed the habit.

Well said. Let me amend it with this, please:

By gigging frequently, you will learn firsthand what does and does not work for you in the real world.

All it takes is one time missing an important note while you were fussing with knobs or undermined by flimsy gear on a gig, and you will be cured forever.

From then on you will seek only gear that you find easy to use and that works reliably. Then if necessary you will get spares, and you're done. No more gear lust. Free to just play and learn. Free at last!

That consumptive effect isn't intrinsic to using the forum. You decide how to use it.

Sounds like perhaps a sabbatical away from TB might be of benefit?

I may give myself one, too, as I've accomplished most of the things I wanted to in terms of improving how my basses and gear work for me. I think TB has helped keep me moving forward the last few months, because it is a place I can share about things I've done that I liked and found useful.

I have finally realized that a jazz bass is as close to the sound in my head as I'm gonna get. That has helped a lot with gas. I don't think I will ever totally get the sound I want completely but buying bass after bass has been a hard lesson learned. If you have the money and desire to have 20 basses my hat is off to you, to each his own.

For me, the biggest problem is time spent (wasted?) on this and other music forums. If I could actually play half as good as what I know about music (or sadly, moreso about gear), man I'd be pretty awesome. Limited funds in recent years has kept GAS under control, although my family might disagree.

I have been thru this for 13 years now, starting at the gear page & plexi palace forums......I cant seem to turn loose of any gear and I want more!

Honestly, the forums have helped me thru health and personal problems because these forums are ALWAYS here 24/7.

My friends & family that don't hang around forums think I am completely crazy for the most part.

90% of my time at forums has been positive....I CANNOT say that about many people in my personal life, including family.

There is SO much cool information sharing at this forum it is CRAZY....it also prevents me from acquiring excess gear when I can get opinions at this forum in advance.

If I am having a bad health day (2 days a week normally), I come here or the gear page.

I love the MUSIC but I also love the GEAR....almost all of the gear I have acquired I can sell and at least break even or maybe make a bit or lose some.

You can't say that about many hobbies.

I've been on some photography forums that have put a huge dent in my wallet. Ever GAS for a Leica digital rangefinder?

Another thing this forum did to me that I hated even more is make me feel like I'll never be a good enough player. Everyone on here has some professional gig backing some almost famous singer/songwriter. They all have elaborate websites listing all the albums they played on and all the gear they own. I strived for this for a while only to realize I had taken on a lame gig with an egomaniac who was signed onto a tiny unknown label. Wasted a good 2 years of my life with that gig until he finally had a meltdown and fired me. Vent over. Moral of the story: contentment.

I think we need 2 GAS forums. 1 that enables - Share your GAS! and one that offers counseling (a like minded friend to tell you you just can't afford it/have no place to put it/don't really need it). I know I could benefit from both on a daily basis.

[Edit]- And yes, I'm sure that has been suggested many times before, but I' fairly new here.

No we do not need a place to attempt to cure you from GAS! If I have to struggle with GAS, so does everyone else!

When I'm busy playing a lot, I find that my GAS is driven by actual musical needs. It remains low-level, unless I need something specific for a gig or studio session, then I try to figure out how to make what I have work. I've found some really cool sounds out of my own gear that way, but that doesn't always cut it - and that's when I come to TB to browse the classifieds.

When things dry up a bit, my GAS is slightly more TB-induced. Rarely do I ever feel like I need something because of TB hype, but my imagination will often run wild after seeing what other TBer's think about something I'm considering.

Fortunately, I stay quite busy playing and my GAS stays manageable.
