Does anyone know what Dirk Lance is doing now?

Agreed! Make Yourself was much better than Morning View, but still far worse tan SCIENCE and Fungusamongus. I used to really like the Faith No More influence that they have basiclly abandoned now.

I dont think Dirk left for that reason, in fact I think he was kicked out. Anyway I think all the incubus albums were fantastic, and if you could put out something better let me know cause I sure as hell can't. I will say that dirk is an awesom player, Ben Kenney is good they are two seriously different styles but Ben Kenney is a guitarist, and you can hear that in his playing.

A guitar player playing bass and a bass player ARE too completely differant things and I think that may be what incubus needs with the newer stuf they've released, it isn't for me, but it's probably for someone. I just dont like hearing guitar players play bass, it's very harsh on my ears.

It was a mutual deal. The two, Alex and the rest of the bandmates, grew apart. Alex was proud of what the band did in the first few albums, and the rest of the band(mainly Brandon) wanted to forget that they even wrote that stuff. Alex is a very smart guy, and he realized that there was a niche for what he does in the video gaming industry.

I love all albums and most songs from all of them. I like both the funk and the mellow. I think their mellow is not dumb mellow. It's still intelligent. The music changed but never lost any quality. IMO. Good luck for Dirk from a big fan, I just hope he doesn't quit playing bass!

He's a smart cookie though he quit after they renegotiated (sp?) their contract with their label. I also heard he wanted to quit during their Mourning View recording sessions. He seemed so different from the others I watched some special on them one day, he'd go to strip clubs while the others would go surfing with groupies.

look at it this way, if some incubus never did their first couple albums and only released the recent stuff, would your opinion be different. a lot of people are just blinded by the fact that they changed their style. if you just look at the albums from a songwriting perspective, you'll start to see it differently.

I read the band sued Sony, they wanted to get out of there. But they didn't in the end. So I think it must be strange to work like that when you are sponsored by something you were just fighting. It must have got very strange, they are obligated to three more releases for the company they were publicy fighting to get out of, even arguing about money and all! Love rears its ugly head!

They were only suing Sony because the contract they signed with them contactually didn't hold up in the state of California. Basicly, they signed a 7 record deal, but in California, after a period of years, the term of the contract isn't valid no matter how long it states in the contract. So, they didn't necessarily want to leave Sony/Immortal, they just wanted more money and a better contract. Sony knew they had no case, so they settled.

Much better then, I though they (the band) had given up and "forgotten" about it! I read they wanted a better share of the total earnings.. I didn't know companies earned that much more than artists, dozens of which earn millions a year! (Still videogames move even more than that, I think - no less ambitions working with games, than with a band)

Just found this thread, but thought I'd comment.

I seriously, seriously hope he does a solo/side project, if that's what you could call it. If you have the "Morning View Sessions" DVD, and watch all the extras, Dirk/Alex freakin' RAN that band. He was the guy stopping and saying "Mike, that sucked" or "Brandon, dude, come on you can do that better". He really was on everyone's asses during the recording sessions and other clips show him writing a LOT of music for that album. It's this reason that I don't think it's really/or as much Kenney's fault that Incubus sucks now, but that they lost both one of the top bass players around AND an incredible songwriter. But, replacing someone of his caliber with a damn guitarist is just an insult to bassists everywhere. I boycott em. ********. Their new stuff is beyond pitiful. Not even worth a listen, IMO. And that's not EVEN comparing it to old Incubus- it in and of itself is just plain bad!

supposedly he left the band on good terms, they did work together after he left in suing Sony.
I've been listening to Incubus for a while now, well I did, up until Morning View. Their first too albums are really good and funky, but a little bit too sparatic IMO. SCIENCE was friggin fantastic, very Primusy. Make Yourself I thought was great except for the singles really, well Pardon Me wasnt bad and neither was Drive until I heard it 40000000 times everywhere and all of a sudden all the 7th grade girls thought Brandon was hot. Besides that I would say Make yourself is a very very very good album, it isnt too comercial, it was still very different and exploratory, but more grounded than the previous albums. Also Brandon's lyrics became a little bit more serious. Morning View on the other hand is really working out for me... as a fantistick beer coaster
