I find it fascinating that people are simultaneously dismissing him as unquestionably one of the greatest musicians to ever touch a bass, whilst also arguing that he could have been so much more in a different genre.
He played what he wanted to play and that's what made him a legendary idol. He played the bass as he saw it. Not to sell records or fill stadiums.
Musical skill is musical skill. I wonder the narrative if he was the bassist of the Rolling Stones or Iron Maiden as opposed to a Jazz sub-genre in a time of Jazz decline.
I judge a bassists skill by what I can't play. I can play Steve Harris riffs and solos all day long, I can cop a good Jamerson, I can't play a single Jaco song.
Don't like Jazz? Cool. Don't like Jaco's style? Cool too. Think Jaco is not a good musician and not superior to 99% of all bassists in talent, technical ability and theory knowledge? Delusional.
I need a double like for this one.Too many silly notes that don’t make sense. Trying to play chords, get a guitar. Change your last name to deflect the hate. Learn some useful music, like Metallica or Taylor Swift.

In my area schools, they're learning his music for assignments. If not his own, then the stuff he was instrumental in helping make well known.
I believe he is the drummer for Social Experiment. Is that Kenny Grohowski on drums? Saw him play on a Brand X reunion tour.

NO 3-TONE SUNBURST???!!!Jaco was an incredible bassist.
That said, I don't really care much for his music, and I find that Jazz bass "bridge pickup only" sound to be kind of grating.
I also can't stand three-tone sunburst.
Here, you'll need this:

Good thing Kenny is playing so tight; that way we don't have to hear any more generational Pastorious "fart-noodling"![]()
