Does anyone only play their P PUP on their PJ?

With my G&L SB-2, I only use the bridge pickup when I need a little extra definition, i.e., almost never. It's all about the mighty MFD split-coil IMO. Some blended tones are useful, no question, but I normally just fire up the split-coil and go.

Thinking about trying to solo or lean more towards the J pickup for a show and just boost my amp volume and see how it goes... I like the sound of the J bridge pickup its just that it's too weak.

I used to gig with P/J's exclusively and used both pups wide open. I then started playing Jazz basses all the time. Now I am obsessed with P basses strung with flats. I still record with my P/J only however.

I do sometimes, but it's mainly because solo J is too thin and P+J sounds weird and boing-y with some distortion/fuzz pedals. And the bass has a switch, so no in between sounds for me. I actually ordered a blend knob last night because I think P+J with either one dialed back might be better options.

Yes. My output drops when using the j. It must be wired out of phase or something. Time to pull out the solder.

I believe this is intrinsic to the pickup layout. It's a big mid scoop when you run both full on, I typically run the P full and inch ever so slightly off the J volume (if you have a V-V-T layout) to resolve the issue. It also makes getting a good slap tone very easy, just crank the J volume and you're there!

With some regularity I'll do just P. Just depends on the situation. I rarely have both all the way up, but I often add just a touch of J with the P full on.

I don't think I'll ever get a Passive bass with a Blend knob because to me a P/J is still primarily a P-bass. Except when occcasionally soling the J for certain sounds my default is P full-on with J to taste.

Yes, because the J pup is noisy in comparison.
In retrospect, I should have just bought a plain old P-bass.

On a PJ the bridge pickup is almost useless, IMO, UNLESS it is noiseless.

I mostly use the P pickup on mine because I also have a J bass.

A PJ is a config I really like w/ P pickup at 100% and J pickup at ~ 75% but it's obviously not for everyone.

I had a Fender MIM P body (black), spent all this money to have it routed for a bridge J and move the jack to the side, installed a DiMarzio PJ set... and then decided I didn't like it. So now my son has it, and I went back and built a Warmoth P with just the one pickup. Yes, I had the option to turn the J pup down, but it also became an aesthetic issue for me. Simple is the essence of the P bass.

I have two P/Js. One is fretless, and I just got it rewired in series. No need for a series/parallel switch on it because I'm so happy with how it sounds now. My second one is a fretted SX P/J that I just got about a month ago. That one will eventually get a series/parallel switch. I change the volumes on it a lot. Surprisingly, I've found a really good sound with the Jazz dimed and the P pickup at about 20%. It sounds like a Jazz bass with more mids with that setting.

I have three P/J basses. My stock active Fender Prophecy II sounds great with the P-pickup soloed for rock and blues, but really shines for funk with both pickups on. It's a little noisy with just the J-pickup so I don't generally bother. I don't use it enough to justify a pickup swap. My passive fretless Prophecy II sounds best to me with the J-pickup full on and then blending in a bit of P-pickup to fill out the bottom a bit. My EMG equipped Fender Prophecy III sounds great on any setting. I adjust the pickup volumes to whatever sounds best to me. I wired both the fretless Prophecy II and and the Prophecy III with individual pickup volumes because I feel that's the most versatile to mix them. The stock Prophecy II has a blend knob.

I love my Aerodyne PJ, but I have found the J pickup so completely useless to me that I fully disconnected it a couple years ago, and moved the input jack to the front of the body where I always prefer it to be - win-win.

For my money, a J bridge pickup only works in concert with a J neck pickup.

I like to experience with my Jag. I love the sound of the two together, which is why I bought it in the first place, but every now and again I turn the J pickup off. the location of the Jag's pickup is in a different spot than the P-bass so it gives it such a cool sound. I sometimes do the same thing with just the J pickup because it's my first bass with that kind of pickup but I just love the sound of the P

I think the P pickup on the Am. Std. Jaguar soloed is wonderful. In passive it's smooth, but clear. In active mode it's breathtaking.

Got this beast awhile back and it had EMG Select passives.. Sounded like warm garbage.. So I upgraded to EMG actives and the bass completely changed .. Run both the P and J at full volume and it sounds amazing.. My only issue is it weigh s about 2 tons.. lol But is is amazing for recording..

I wired my pj stereo..... earth shattering.

Something a little similar here: SVT4 and 1x15 + 4x10, like two different voices.
Always both pickups turn on, active EMG HZ with a brazilian pre amp (same electric uses by Trevor Boulder).
I'll try just the P this weekend...
