Does guitar center just not care?

If it's just truss rod adjustment and action, I can get around that in about 20 mins, if it's also intonation, about 40.

Depends on the store.
The one closest to me (Winston Salem, NC) most instruments are pretty decent.
Perfect? No. But I've not not seen anything major.
Just about all is even in tune.
The one exception are the little Seagull strummer thingies ...... they don't seem to know what to do with those.

Depends on the store, I think. Here, we have a Sam Ash and a GC across the road from each other and I've found both of them to be about equal in terms of caring for their display items. If anything, more new basses with loose or broken knobs or other signs of damage at the Sam Ash.

I think it's only fair to separate "new" from "used".

When I think "used gear", GC is not my first thought/option.

However, I've seen new inventory that was on the sales floor is horrific condition.

One might think the manufacturers would say: "When we made you an authorized __________ dealer, we thought you'd represent our company and products to some minimal standard ..."

Seriously, with what I've seen at Guitar Center(S), if I were Jim Rosenberg, I'd pull their card.

After doing all the adjustments (truss rod, string height, intonation) I let the instrument ‘rest’ for 24 hours. I’ll then re-evaluate the condition of it. Almost 85-90% of the time it still needs a tweet or two. Like I said earlier, to do a proper setup takes time and patience.

My GC and SA are about a block away from each other; fortunately for me, my SA has alway been first rate (it also helps that they are next door to my favorite Mexican restaurant, perhaps there is some sort of relationship, there ). The GC is next to a Dunkin' which probably explains a lot, too.

Nobody knows this, but whenever a bass is posted for an online sale, they release the truss rod bowing the neck so that it’s easier to slide the bubble wrap under the strings before shipping.
