Does no one play P-basses anymore?

At the small rock club gigs I've played and attended over the past few years, I've seen Precisions and Jazzes in roughly equal measure, with a few Rics and a handful of modern active basses too. And it has nothing to do with age, because some of the youngest players are on Precisions, and the youngest of all was totally old school with a Sting signature single coil P going through an Ampeg rig. One of the best tones I've ever heard. Last gig I saw, the bassist had a nicely worn '77 Precision and sounded fantastic. They aren't going anywhere...don't worry. :D

I recall reading a Bass Guitar Mag article about Emo bassists and almost all of the 12 or 13 profiled played Fenders. A large number of them played P basses as well which I found odd! The bassists in My Chemical Romance, Hawthorne Heights, The Used, Jimmy Eat World and My Morning Jacket all used P basses.

how dare you put MMJ in the EMO category.

I sort of play a P bass (American Deluxe 5 string). The purists will insist this is not a P bass, but once I played it I didn't want to play anything else (for rock at least). It's not the easiest bass to play, but there is just something about it. My USA Cirrus was a much easier player. That bass was like a fine crafted watch, but just didn't have that something that kicks you in the face while playing live in a super loud rock club.

I now play 5 string P-basses. Love 'em!

I wasn't talking about TV and guest spots in terms of bands, I was primarily talking about bands that my band has gigged with, and the shows I've been too in the last 6 months.

Its all about the J now and it makes me sad. Oh yeah, I forgot in the OP that there were a few Rics, but not any serious showing.

I own 6 Fender Ps and 3 Precision type basses (not counting the mounds of broken Squier P's I have lying around.) so I definatly love the P. It just breaks my heart that I've gotten comments at gigs that I'm playing a P-bass with flats...
