Does no one play P-basses anymore?

I recall reading a Bass Guitar Mag article about Emo bassists and almost all of the 12 or 13 profiled played Fenders. A large number of them played P basses as well which I found odd! The bassists in My Chemical Romance, Hawthorne Heights, The Used, Jimmy Eat World and My Morning Jacket all used P basses.

PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE MY MORNING JACKET IN SUCH A DESPICABLE CATEGORY ! They are far more talented than any of those sorry bands. Emo! Obviously you havent listened to them. Their singer did one of the songs in the new Bob Dylan movie. Although I guess Bob Dylan is kinda emo. He did like to complain a lot. And he's a mediocre singer. Sounds like emo to me! :hiding: jk

edit: sorry for missing the earlier comments. i was so enraged that i had to post immediately.

...so put the gun down. The nice doctor will give you a shot and you'll feel a LOT better.

Where were we? Oh yeah, Precisions. I think I'm the only guy around here who plays one. When I go out to see other bands, the bass player has a black/rosewood J in his hands.

We had a guy sit in with our band a couple of times. He brought his Jazz, looked black. "No, it's midnight blue" he said. Sorry!

Maybe they don't play P basses because they're not all of 'em particularly ept. I'm sure that's just around here, but it seems like if they can sort of hit the beats, they're a bass player...and if they know a bass line, it's ONE bass line and it goes on every song, like putting mayonnaise on white bread.

Did I mention, I play a Precison? Well, actually, three of 'em....

I wasn't talking about TV and guest spots in terms of bands, I was primarily talking about bands that my band has gigged with, and the shows I've been too in the last 6 months.

Its all about the J now and it makes me sad. Oh yeah, I forgot in the OP that there were a few Rics, but not any serious showing.

I own 6 Fender Ps and 3 Precision type basses (not counting the mounds of broken Squier P's I have lying around.) so I definatly love the P. It just breaks my heart that I've gotten comments at gigs that I'm playing a P-bass with flats...

Go see a show that falls into one of the many "Punk Rock" catagories, and you'll see loads of P basses.

My observations from the bands we've played with over the past couple of years.

Precision- Almost used universaly in Punk Rock bands

Jazz- a few here and there.

Rickenbacker- See them about the same amount as J basses.

Stingray- yup, they show up once in a while, but not all that often.

Yamaha/Ibanez- not very often but once in a while.

Sadowsky- Zero. And I would say that for every other genre of music I've seen in the past few years live too. I've never even seen someone playing one live in a cover band. I have seen quite a variety of stuff being played in cover bands though.
The blues guys seem to be into P's and J's mostly.

The people I've seen playing original music, seem to be sticking with the "classics"

Those are my observations for what it's worth.

That's how Bass Guitar Mag categorized them apparently. And they seemed to accept if their in the issue. Not saying I think their Emo or not but they seem to think they are.

They are definitely still popular. There aren't too many basses that you can just pick up, plug in, and get a very good sound with minimal tweaking for most styles of music. I have had several Precisions, but I don't currently own one. They have been replaced by my Lakland Hollowbody, which for what I am doing does the job as well if not a bit better. I would never hesitate to use one though!

I play in a punkish band and use P-basses, StingRays, a Bongo, and a Jazz. I do have to say that I mainly see guys with standard fender jazz basses, with schecters and ibanez's, and the occasional epi thunderbird. I rarely see P-basses except for in a few of the bigger known bands that I've played with. I dont think P-basses are going anywhere.
