Does no one play P-basses anymore?

I rocked my old fretless P at a recent show, it was a fun change of pace, and it gave me a much different tone than I'm used to. I was thinking of playing my bandmates American P at the show after that, but after comparing it back to back with my 82 squier Jazz, it didn't even compare. The P thumped a lot harder, but since I'm filling a lot of space in a two piece band, I need something that can pretend to be a guitar, and that's a major shortcoming of the P.

and yes, this mic stand is improvised from a cymbal stand. It was that kind of show.

My first bass ever was a MIM P, and I really haven't played it at all in the last 7-8 years. I finally put some new strings on it (I think the old ones were 4-5 years old), and I find myself wanting to play the bass a lot lately. I wish it had more frets, and it needs a professional to set up the neck, but I really dig it.

Most people I see playing out are using P's. Seems a lot of the big name players (see Bass Player magazine) are going back to Fenders after their forays elsewhere. Most have P's in their arsenal, and frequently is their main instrument. Even the younger players are getting more into P's from what I've seen in recent BP interviews. As for me, I like J's, have a '62 CIJ reissue myself. I like the feel and tone of the P much more, guess that's one reason I have 12 of them (all lefties!) Here is a photo of me at a recent gig with my Capri.

I hope no one uses p-basses any more...

That way when my band gets signed and we take the world by storm, fender will see me still rocking the p-bass, give me a sponsorship and I'll be rolling in the money (and more p-basses).

12/15 this was my first show using my p-bass, its been a hartke wk-4 before that.

Oh and since we're on the subject... Where's the best place to find a nice replacement pick-guard? Everywhere I look seems to be cheap knockoffs. I needs my black on black.

If all the basses in the world blew up and only Fenders were left, i'd play a P. It gets me 90++% there, but it lacks this certain something i am thankful my Zon fills (the puny number of frets and the puny number of strings are contributing factors).

Tonally, it's great. Jazzes... not so much so.
