Does price = quality/sound

The euros and the usa basses all use the same necks. That's why there's not much of a difference but better finishes on the top woods.

There's a lot more than that. From inlays, pre's, hardware, and the US basses are full slabs ( most) not tops. The new euro's are sandwich which actually costs more but still half the bass is solid figured. Hard to call it a top really. Are the US basses 2x as good? Not really imo but that's from the under models being of such high quality to start. But that's the way Spector does things.

Fender and Gibson both skate by on their name. Epi's and Squiers aren't any better than Gibsons or Fenders but for the most part they're not worse and for the price its really not a comparison. I would love to start tomorrow as Gibson's QC guy and get paid by the number of instruments I'd reject. And yes I've owned all of them except squiers (and played quite a number of them). Some basses and some 6 strings. If you're dead set on getting the best instrument for you I'd put cost and brand out of my head (most psychology says thats not possible but we'll pretend), go play every bass you can get your hands on, and let that decide. You might be surprised at what you find.

No one skates by on their name these days. There's too much competition for that to succeed. Where are you finding these bum basses these days? Seriously. I haven't seen a new US-made Fender or Gibson in years that wasn't well made.

I'm sure there are literally dozens of people out there that prefer a MIC Squier to a US Fender. I have to remind you that this thread isn't about personal preference. It's whether you get something for the extra money you pay.

I get it. You like Spector and think it is the best. Good for you. A lot of other folks like Fender and think they are the best. No opinions will be changed by hating on Fender and tooting your Spector horn. Enjoy your Spector and rock on.

There is no best imo. But you cannot compair the quality of those 2 instrument brands. I'm sorry but other than the name, you do not get what you pay for in a fender.

what would that "something" be that wasn't down to personal preference? Beyond obvious things like reliability and resale value?

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, however wrong it may be... I would bet that for every pro playing a Spector, there are probably 10x as many playing Fenders - just sayin'...

No doubt...

Fender gives away gear and even pays pros to play them ( tour support etc.). ALL Spector pros pay for their basses. Discounted , yes, but there are no freebies there regardless of level. Big difference. Besides ring a pro musician is about selling yourself as a business, making a living needs income from what ever sources are available. Playing what you like is a different story. Just saying.

Take a look at all the name artists that have played Fenders over the years - how could it be possible that you know more than they do???

Don't get me wrong - Spector makes a great instrument, IME/IMO - I've owned a few, and probably will own some more in the future... BUT, some of the BS *some* Spector fans hurl towards Fender is ********...

True on the last part, but being a pro, doesn't mean you have a clue or that you even care about the quality of an instrument, hell it doesn't even mean your a decent musician. It just means you are in the music business as a performer.

The sad part about this thread is that people come out and stake fender as the standard for quality. Lets use ibanez as the standard, and compair from their price points. That would keep things a bit more honest.

But how would their "quality" be judged, other than personal preference? I may feel that my hipshot bridge cost more to make than a typical BBOT, but to say that it's better quality is still a matter of preference.

It should start before the hardware honestly. Materials are what you pay for, fit and finish on the craftsman ship is there too. A neck pocket cut sloppy enough to have a credit card slid in between the neck and body should be "B" stock, not the norm.

On the other hand, I guess it might be better to ask what people think they are paying for and give examples of that. Get an idea of what their idea of quality is.

Really???!!! - You REALLY think all those pros are playing Fenders because they get paid to???

Man, that Spector kool-aid is some powerful stuff...
