Does Slap equal Funk?

Slap does not equal funk necessarily, but it sometimes equals annoying (think GC bass gear section).

I don't want to sound rude and I certainly understand the hypocrisy of my response, but (to paraphrase Charlie Sheen in FB's Day Off) if you get "annoyed" by something someone is playing in the bass gear section of GC, perhaps your problem is YOU.

Worry about yourself not what someone else is playing in GC.
Thats just an opinion.

PS: Funk is not a technique or even a sound; its a frame of mind and a place in your heart.
Next time you're stuck walking home in the pouring rain, take a moment to slide on your sunglasses. Dig?

I get annoyed because I'm trying to listen to the tone of a bass and all I can hear some person slapping and popping away in my face. I've literally had to say to someone, "Hey, would you mind turning down a little bit? Thanks." It's just a matter of common courtesy. I usually go there to buy things, not wank the afternoon away like some people do. At that point, the problem is definitely NOT me.

And by the way, I know about funk pretty darn well. Yeah, I dig.

How often did Jamerson slap? his bass was NAMED the "Funk Machine". To me, funk is a groove and I think we should all be able to agree that his lines had groove like nothing else.

+1 to those who mentioned Bernard Edwards. The current owner of his Stingray (John Taylor) also has a fair bit of funk in his playing IMO, and rarely uses slap. I've always found his slap parts very tasteful as well.

Jamerson was not a funk player and lots of music is known as "groove" music - but that doesn't make it funk.

Funk is all timing and feel. You gotta know when to NOT play to be truly funky. Good funk has alot of air in it and then, when least expected that funky note hits behind the beat an pops you right in the booty. Doesn't matter what caused that funky note to ring out...finger, thumb, foot, chicken bone, The Clubor dropping the bass on the floor...you know it's funky when you start pumping your shoulders and snapping your fingers.
