Does such a bass exist? (SS content)

The low B is gonna "suck" based on your criteria, no matter how much you would like it not to. I'm not really sure why its that important, as heck, unless you are playin' satan's music or trying to hit the brown note frequently, you can't be using the B string enough that you need piano quality, or even so so quality.

In this case you can have your cake, and eat it too, but it just won't taste that good...

I like hitting the low D and using the B string for positional playing on upper frets. And I don't like significant touch adjustment between strings.

I see that this is the general consensus. Well, a negative result is a result too, this thread was meant as a research :)

Just a thought, I set up a 25in guitar with medium bass strings and it sucked. I set it up with the BEAD from a leftover used 5er set and it was great. Once I got over the fact that the strings were larger than normal under my fingers it played and sounded great.

What about something like the Brice with heavier strings. Like really heavy. Good tension is really all that matters, right?

I have a Strat I rigged up as a 25" bass, doing the same, a BEAD set tuned to EADG, tension is great, action is great, tone is really great, lotta fun too.

I can't imagine the Brice being too bad with heavy strings.

I was on the same search not too long ago.

That Brice was on my radar for a while, but i really wanted a 5er, not a 6. I got lucky and found a used Birdsong Hy5 right here in the classifieds... it's really everything I ever wanted and more.

The B string on the Birdsong is actually better than the B on my (34" scale) Warwick Corvette 5er. :) I use it all the time.

Back to the Brice... I've never returned anything to Rondo personally, but if you don't mind a 6 string, don't they have a pretty good return policy if you don't like it?

I just ordered one 60 seconds ago :D

The string you use for "B" is more important than the particular SS you buy I suspect. I'm thinkin' maybe a .145 or .150 ? I usually string my SS's 40-55-75-107 ...

I'm interested in the "B" as a thumbrest mostly :D but being able to hit a "D" occasionally without detuning should be useful too :ninja: .

Even on 4 string SS's I use a heavier "E" than the rest of the set (40-55-75-107) . My "E"s sound as good as a standard scale to me :D . One of my 28.5" scale Mikro's has a .120 "E" :eek: .

This is an older email from fellow TB'er Frank Orlando. Gives some hope if you can find one used:

Hello Ebon,

I have two 32" 5 string Warwicks.

The first is a 2007 black Corvette Standard that I ordered to my specs from the Warwick Custom Shop. It is a black gloss finish over an ash body. The pickups and electronics are active. The bass has a brass JAN I nut. This bass has the best B of any bass I have ever played and I have a tried a lot. It is so well defined and fat... it's sick! I use DR Low Riders with a 130 B. I recently got my second 32" Warwick completed. I actually built this one from two Warwick basses. I bought a used 32" 5 string Corvette Standard on ebay that was dinged to hell but had a perfect neck and frets. Then I found a perfect 34" burgandy red Corvette Pro-Line in maple. I switched the necks and added a new JAN III brass nut and I now have a second killer 32" 5 string! This one plays excellent as well. The B is equally as defined and fat as the custom Warwick. I use the DR's on this bass as well. I gig regularly with both. Hope this helps... don't be worried about the 32" B string on a Warwick. They are unreal.
