Does this bass need a tort pickguard?

Think he should spend $130 on a piece of plastic?
Nah... I'd spring for a Spitfire if they'd do a custom. ~$300 +

I have a regular Fender tort pickguard that I bought for my third P Bass. It doesn't fit because pot holes do not line up. That is, I cannot use the input jack hole of a regular pickguard for the tone pot (the 3rd knob) because the body cavity is not wide enough there.
CTS mini pot??

Pick guards aren't hard to make. I've made two P type guards for basses I built at home from tort material that cost me $15 Australian. You already have the template in the black guard. If your handy with tools it's way better than forking out so much money for a purpose built one. Having said that, the black looks pretty good to me. Unless the tort is lighter coloured I don't see that you'd be gaining much.

if all the screw hole fit. and all you need is another slot for the knob. make another hole. it don't take much a drill and a few drill bits.. drill a pilot hole. reverse the drill.. then drill the with the right size hole and then when thru put it on normal it should clean the hole.. to protect the guard put down painters tape on the on the front and back. if you never done this try clamping it to a board or work table

No need for tort, but on this bass, my preference would be for a black guard without the white line around the edges.

Straight all black against the burst.

You can order a new all black guard.

But the quick fix is under $5.00, depending on where you buy your fine marking supplies.

ain't nothin' worse than pot holes. my street be full of them shiznits

I opened this thread expecting to answer yes to tort, but that seriously looks great with the black pickguard. I'd keep it like that!

Oh, and don't forget, you can always buy a different bass that comes with a tort pickguard. Might cost more than $130, but there would be whole bunch of other fun stuff attached to the plastic to make it worthwhile.

This is my current No. 2 bass (Fender American Performer P). Although the bass looks good with the black pickguard, I keep thinking about replacing it with a tort pickguard. The problem is because the regular P pickguard doesn't fit with this bass, I'd have to order a tort pickguard made for this model from WD. The total would be about $130 (yikes!). What do you think?

There is no way I would spend $130 for a Pick guard. My experience with torts is there are torts and there are torts. Too many hues to chose from and most will not works as well with your sunburst. I wouldn’t count on a picture either. Dye lots change and who know what if any filters were use by the photographer.
