I think it looks great just as it is ... very 70's. Don't do nothin'.This is my current No. 2 bass (Fender American Performer P). Although the bass looks good with the black pickguard, I keep thinking about replacing it with a tort pickguard. The problem is because the regular P pickguard doesn't fit with this bass, I'd have to order a tort pickguard made for this model from WD. The total would be about $130 (yikes!). What do you think?

Avantgarde if you don't want to be proselytized to in the processGo tort, but go with Spitfire pickguards.
