That is exactly the case. To totally defeat it you do have to take extra steps with the plucking hand and start muting before you lift, which is not always possible. However, I am happy to know now that the sound is not a problem and I can now find the next thing to worry about.
"Clean" is not my sound if I do anything more challenging than this sample.
I think part of my misapprehension was that when I started learning bass, I was also just getting into dub music, so those were some of the basslines that I really started paying attention to. And dub is so heavily processed and thumpy that the bass almost sounds like a synth... I think they use tapewounds a lot too... so it's quite different from the sounds I was making.

As you lift your fretting finger to mute the note the string is still vibrating and it will definitely buzz against the fret a bit. I think this is what you are hearing.

Just had a listen, and I don't get anything untoward at all. Of course, it could be that my ears have circled the block more than once, but I would love to sound that clean.
