done with steak from restaurants

I wish I would have taken a picture of what my friend ordered from a food truck. For $18...plus a tip...he got some lobster thrown on a hot dog bun. He gave me a piece, the lobster was dry. I just don't see how people flock to this thing as if it's actually worth $18.

It was good, it just wasn't Wow, good.
It was one of those things where I sort of knew better, but was hoping for different results this time. The very definition of insanity.
I guess living in Asia ruined me, I'd rather have good sushi.
OTOH, T.R.'s ribs are really good!

Depends where you are eating. Places like Texas Roadhouse are not great. I'd rather age and cook them myself.

Yep, quite a while back. I could never get one worth a chit or cooked the way i want it. Tough, stringy, thin, always over cooked. I wait for Publix to run ribeye on sale and get some cut like i want, 1 3/4" to 2", then cooked properly. Well seared on the outside and cold in the middle, salt pepper and a little garlic before cooking. Heaven on a plate but with my current situation i've cut back to 4~5 times a year.
Right with you there KBD. I have an upper price limit to everything in my life from toilet paper to .....well....steak. In most cases steak has crossed the line. In Toronto the best steak houses- Ruth Chris, Barberians, The Cannery have hit $50 for a steak. Last week (in an expensive town I admit) I saw the striploin at $82.
For the price of that the two of us I could eat Thai, Indian, Jamaican etc. for a week.

I asked for medium-well, but it was closer to medium-rare.
If I had cooked it at home I could just throw it back on, but it would be sure to come back with a little spittle on it if I'd asked at the restaurant

The one in Hoover Al is consistently decent, but never WOW.
It's a shame, they're a STEAKhouse, but their steak is the least best-tasting thing they serve, LOL!

I've such a low ratio of good steaks in restaurants, and even the best ones seem overpriced, that I usually prefer to get something else when I go to a steak restaurant.
I got the worst ribs ever at a Texas Roadhouse. Couldn't believe how dry they were.
Back on the topic of steaks... Yeah, my experience with steaks at restaurants is quite hit and miss. I would say 5% this is great, 10% not bad, 35% meh, and 50% "what did I pay for this?"

I have eaten steak at some great places here in Denver, Elway's, Morton's, Ruth. Best ever was buying rib eye from a local grocery store in Fort Walton Beach Florida and cooking them on a hibachi. Another great one was at the Mercury Cafe, I was running sound and the owner Marilyn made me one. Funny thing, they are famous for vegetarian dish's.
Generally I like steak at Texas Roadhouse or Outback, but I understand you're never going to get a great steak there. Their schtick is good steak at reasonable prices, and they're never going to provide a better steak than you can produce yourself. That said, one of the worst steaks I've ever had was $42 with no salad or sides - which is quite high for Chattanooga - so paying more is no guarantee either. And steak houses' burgers are often horrible because they grind up old steaks; it's a crap shoot which depends on whether they have any old steak.
For a great steak at good prices, try some mom and pop Mexican restaurants operated by actual Mexicans. Sometimes they have amazing steaks because it's their livelihoods on the line and often they just seem incapable of not delivering good value on anything. But steak is simply easy to cook, so I doubt you'll ever get one better than you can grill, especially since you're cooking specifically to your tastes without needing to please a majority of people.

I was thinking this earlier today, the steak in the carne asada burritos are better than what I had at Roadhouse.
Texas Roadhouse is to steak as old Navy is to clothing. It's no more a steakhouse than old navy is a purveyor of hand crafted suits.

You could always go to Logan's. My son-in-law took us to eat there on Saturday. About 40 minutes after we ordered, we flagged down our waitress and asked for our salads. We were there over an hour before our steaks arrived. Mine was medium-well, which would have been fine except I had ordered extra-rare. I would have sent it back but I didn't care to spend the rest of the evening there.
