done with steak from restaurants

For a great steak at good prices, try some mom and pop Mexican restaurants operated by actual Mexicans.

Oh dear, I was just remembering there's a Salvadoran restaurant in town that serves great carne asada (grilled steak).
Latinos know how to season the meat:
orange or lemon juice (sometimes both), cumin, black pepper, ancho chili powder, garlic, & then grill it with olive oil
maybe some paprika & oregano, as well

Maybe it's because I live in Texas, but our TR is fairly decent. Yeah I could pick up a few wagyu steaks from the local butcher (and I do) but occasionally going out isn't bad. Their rolls and cinnamon butter go pretty hard, too. And I was curious about the frozen steaks thing and it turns out each restaurant employees it's own butcher that cuts up the meat every day or so, which isn't bad for a massive chain imo.

Living in Massachusetts sux for steak.
The TR is the only show in town if you're hungry and want whatever size you desire. It's that or drive into Boston for a steak dinner and night only very well to do people can afford with any regularity. Still your going to get some fooffie pitiful 6 oz thing with some fancy Demi swirl and some green sticks or something.

Yeah. I'm a hungry man with few choices here so Ol' Slab of beef it is.

My last topic went so well that I thought I'd dip into this one.

JMHO, but after having a nice steak at Texas Roadhouse yesterday I feel like the prices we're paying for steak in a restaurant are too damn high & the steak itself had the least bang for the buck.

For the price I paid I could have gotten an AYCE sushi lunch for two.
The kicker is, I could have done the job on the steak at home, LOL!

The sushi is a different story.
at least not w/o some training, which a friend actually did

Anyone else swear off restaurant steak?
or another low-value-for-money item

+1 on sushi! Every once in a while the carnivore in me comes out and only a good steak will satisfy, and like you said, best done at home. But on the average, give me either grilled salmon or chicken any day of the week, and sushi or ramen for lunch.

It helps to have a grill with a sear burner with a stove type burner, not to mention a smoker with convection. Just about every day when there is no precipitation, we cook outside.

When his steak was brought to the table, the waitress asked if he needed any A1 or Heinz 57. His reply?

"Ma'am, I sure hope not."
Good steak requires no sauce.
Good cheesecake requires no toppings.

An aside... My mom was a meat germaphobe. Any meat I had growing up was way overcooked. I didn't know what steak was actually supposed to taste like until some time in college.

I might just be in on this with you. I'm vacationing in Vegas right now. You'd think that a great steak could be had in a hundred different places down here. Especially for the money. I can't say that I've ever been wowed down here by a steak any more than I can wow myself at home for a fraction of the cost. Kinda disappointing TBH.

Grew up in a "well done" household myself and I can remember not understanding all the hubbub over steak until I went out to dinner with some family to (dun dun dun!) a TR and was persuaded by my uncle to try my steak medium rare (but closer to rare). That was a game changer and I was probably 23-24 at the time.

I used to eat steak all the time at restaurants... now I rarely do. Now when I go out I want something different from what I normally eat. Even I can cook steak.

So my steak story:
There was one steak house I loved growing up. It was a long drive, so we only ate there when travelling that way. The farm across the road owned the restaurant. They raised their own beef and aged it themselves. They took real pride in their steaks.

I always told my wife about this magical place. Well we finally got to go there... and it was terrible :atoz: Turns out the restaurant had changed hands. It was way more expensive and the quality of the steak was, at best, average.

I have no stakes in this, but I most likely won't order burgers anytime soon. Every time I had one, it was an underseasoned slop of various ingredients in a bun. I can make better ones at home, and much cheaper too. Maybe I've never been to a decent burger place, but even those that advertise themselves as such couldn't convince me.

I stopped eating steak at restaurants a long time ago. Filet mignon, tournedos, chateaubriand, are all not worth the price in a restaurant where I live. They can't cook it correctly. I should write, they aren't used to eating it rare to med. rare in Ukraine. Also most places don't bother with fat cast iron skillets. Heck some places use sodium. That is just so wrong. They think people can't tell the difference? Wait... sorry, most people don't care.......

These little things make a big difference. It's not rocket science but one needs to know some simple facts. At the end of the day, if you can't eat it with just good quality salt, then something is wrong.

I wish I had space for a huge fridge. I could learn to age different parts of the steer and do some serious taste tests. Oh well, one of these days.....
