Dont play Army gigs

If you knew the song and were getting paid 3x your regular pay......and the audience had guns and knew how to use them.....:hiding: Play the stupid song. It's 3, maybe 5 minutes of your life! That's it......

Heck personally I actually like playing summer of 69...... you can play around with the notes a bit in the chorus if you get bored (octaves are your frined):). And the audience always loves it.... most of them sing along. I'll take happy singing along audience any day.

However......if the band didn't know it, just say sorry guys, we don't know that one , we'll play it next time. :)

Gotta agree with everyone here. I've done Air Force base gigs here in the past. They were actually fun, and even more goofy than Spinal Tap's version.
I suspect that this won't be the first gig that goes bad for you. It could be time to woodshed, and work on presentation and professionalism. Being brash is one thing, but not at the expense of biting the hand that feeds you.

And that Brian Adams song, too. Hey man, I can't stand Sweet Home Alabama anymore. But I live in Texas, and when you play in the South, you play that song. I also can't frakkin' stand Mustang Sally. OMG, I HATE IT!!! But the ladies wanna hear it, and the guys tip better if you get the ladies dancing, so...I play the stupid thing.

Sometimes, you just have to play the stupid thing, you know?

Seems to me that the reception you received could have been the natural response of an audience watching people they knew didn't want to be there and were giving off signals to that effect. I'd probably react the same way. Its kind of insulting.

Anyway, sounds like you guys didn't want to do the show. If the pay was the only reason--which I don't necessarily think is wrong in itself--going there with the intent off pissing of the audience seems pretty juvenile and unprofessional if that's what you guys did...conciously or unconsciously.

I dont know how it is in the US armed forces but in our army the last people you want to mess with are the cooks.

Here in the midwest of the U.S. I've found gigs for the military to be a blast. My band played one last year for a proud group of Marines that made it back from Iraq. Those guys know how to party! We do a lot of blues and classic rock, and jam band stuff that went over big with them, and if playing Mustang Sally made them happy as they got on the dance floor with their girl friends and wives, we were more than happy to oblige.

..just played a gig at sophie's saloon in hidalgo friday night...and after we announced our last song of the night and played it, the prettiest lady in the place walks up, stuffs a $20. in the tip jar, and says, 'play 'sweet home' again!' yes, we had played it earlier...yes, she had heard it...and yes, we played it again...made her smile! we must'a been doin' something right! later, ron (the bass-playin' jukebox)

oh btw, it was a callback gig from 8 months ago..

Man for those 2 songs to get what would have and could have been a great crowd going...*** I'd have played em all night ..keep the punters happy ..keep the pay packets coming...( Yep..I have played em both like a gazillion times ..I know how tired they are but almost every gig some one will ask again)

OMG, there's a good bar in Hidalgo!?!? My goodness, the RGV really *has* grown! I grew up in Weslaco, back when Hidalgo was a lil' ol' low spot in the road. Left in '81, when there was no work. Still have a few friends down there though. We ever get back down there, I'll give you the heads up so we can come hear you play. I promise not to make you play Sweet Home! LOL!
