Don't Wear Shorts

Do the TB fashion police have an opinion on capris? I live in a pretty cold part of the country, so I like having a chance to wear something besides pants and long underwear for 2 months out of the year. I typically wear the capris with calf-high Harley boots. Also, I am seldom seen onstage without a black bowler hat, regardless of the season. I must be breaking an awful lot of fashion rules.
Oh yeah ... I'm sure you are! ;)

Well, according to Jimmy, Sammy in shorts doesn't count because he's already famous. Jimmy prefers that we instead recall the older Sammy, the one in shiny, tight, red satin pants. :D

Whether we want to recall that or not, however, might be a nice sidebar.

Once again people here seem to think that EVERY bassist plays their kind of music in their kind of band. If I show to a country gig, jazz gig, blues gig, corporate gig, wedding/anniversary gig in shorts I'd be drubbed out of the band, and rightly so. If you're playing at Carl's Crab Shack on the beach, wear your shorts. Makes no difference to me at all, and shouldn't to anyone else, either.

I'll take shorts, anyday!!

LOL. That'd be a sporran. Specifically, a hunting sporran. And it's alwas a good idea to wear a heavy one, in case some inebriated broad yells, "Dress up day!" and grabs your kilt. :D

My understanding is that until Queen Bess buys the proverbial Scottish castle, that you can wear underwear under your kilt. Once there is a king on the throne though, custom says commando... But I still prefer the heavy sporran!

Don't wear shorts, only play a P bass with a tort guard and flats, only play a fearless/fearful with the digital amp of the month. Play only the recorded line note for note. Don't do originals, only covers. Somewhere in there, try to have some fun.

You forgot about not mixing drivers, only stacking 2x10 or 2x12 cabinets vertically and that tone is all in the fingers...

Well, it's settled, tonight I'm going home and sewing all those patches I picked up on tour to my favorite pair of shorts. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the 'sticker bass' of stage attire! But I'm not going to stop there, oh no, I'm going to break the zipper, then sew another zipper inside of the first, unseen from the outside, so that it looks like I'm constantly walking around with my fly open. I'm gonna sew zippers into all the pockets so my picks won't fall out, and for shitzengiggles I'm gonna put a double row of studs around the left leg hem. I'm gonna wear those shorts every show, appropriate weather or not, and I'm never going to wash them. Now so long as I don't grab the -3db@120Hz. shorts, I should be golden...

And in 12 months, I still be the bass player in the punk rock band I helped found 16 years ago. Dogs and cats will still be at odds with each other, the polar ice caps will still exist, and the earth will continue to orbit the sun, while the moon still orbits the earth.

There are bass players out there hanging on the passing note! Let's get some perspective here people!

EDIT: poopiezengiggles - I guess the automatic cuss replacer wasn't thrown off by a Beerfest reference!

I don't think the outfit is dependent upon the music you're playing, but more the place that you're playing. Probably shouldn't play a wedding in shorts and probably shouldn't play a house show wearing a tux.

But when it really comes down to it, don't let other people dictate what you wear. As long as you're comfortable, the music sounds decent, and you're not breaking any laws, you should be able to wear what you want on a gig.

Now whether or not you get hired back is a whole other story.
