Hi sorry for the late reply, well i use a pick all the time in that band !! Ant fuzz 99% of the time too . I've now consider basses like lakland, sandberg still MM too. Not sure which one i should pick as for a 5-string as it's not that easy.

IMO, I'd go for a passive 4-string you like and tune it down with heavier strings. I am currently using a set of Rotosound Drop Zones, and I like them a lot. The nut will need modifying to accept the bigger strings, as someone already mentioned, but for that style of music, I personally would not use an active bass.

Also, for tuning that low I prefer a bass with a bridge pickup to give the notes a little more definition, but that's up to you. I recently picked up a Fender Geddy Lee jazz bass for my stoner rock project, and it's working out nicely so far. I feel a PJ of some sort would also work, but that's an experiment I can't afford at the moment.

It's a P/M. It's gonna be versatile for you to get that classic rock tone of pick and a P bass down pat. Then it's gonna allow you to get a hard rock crunch with the Musicman pickup. Then when you want that extra edge you can turn both on together and F'N let loose.

Back from the mountain trip finally, yeah that sanberg looks promising. For now, i'm considering brands like sadowsky, nordstrand or lakland. Especially the P inspired models in 5-String. Do you think you guys that such bass could do the job perfectly in my situation ?

Hi folks,

First post here, i hope i'm not gonna ask something too redundant or stupid .

Well, i just joined a doom/stoner rock band, which play really low and loud rock. We are tuned in B, A or Bb so i'd prefer a 5-string bass. But it's really hard to find a good 5-string (i mean sounding as good as 4-string one with an amazing B).

To resume, i need a bass with a long sustain, lot of bass and a very agressive tone. I mostly play through distortion DIY pedals like bif muff, woolly mammoth and alike. I actually use an US Ampeg SVT-3 PRO head with an Ampeg Classic cab. Playing the bass aggressively with a plectrum close to the bass bridge.

I'm actually looking used bass around and i'm hesitating between an old passive vintage 4-string PBass or Teleca Bass (i've an offer for a 77' one around 2K€) dropped tune in BEAD or a modern active bass like a Musicman Stingray Classic 5. What do you think about that guys ? My budget is around 2K€ selling another bass i actually own.

Any other advice of other bass i should give a try (i'm going to paris this week end to try some bass). Also it seems that gear in US are very less expensive than in Europe and a friend of mine is going to live to SF soon. So any advice of cool shop around SF ? Or advice how to ship at affordable cost a bass to Europe (i'm sure some of you have some experience).
