Nah, that's most likely the EHX Bass Big Muff. It's a decent pedal. The Russian Green Muff remake mentioned before is the Wren & Cuff Tall Font Russian. The BBM can't hold up to the TFR. I have both and never touched the BBM again. The TFR just stomps all over it, imo.

The TFR costs 189$, you can probably find it cheaper used or on ebay. The extra cost is well worth it though. Matt's build quality is excellent.

Another vote for Swollen Pickle.
That thing is HUGE. I'm selling it because it's just too massive for my band and a bit problematic with the volume. It always rattles the floor. It sounds fantastic but it's too doom/stoner for my needs.
I think the bassist from Russian Circles used it live, but removed it because it's finicky for live use.

Yeah, +1 to all that. The TFR is pricey (compared to the alternatives), but the build and sound quality justify the expense. It does what it does very, very well. And yeah, it is a compressed sound (muff like). And yeah, if you put a drive or an angry fuzz (I use the TAFM) in front of it you can regain or accentuate some angry harmonic content.

My band isn't straight stoner rock, but for fuzz/OD I use the Way Huge Pork Loin. It's got a real nice, smooth saturation that I'm a fan of. In general I'm not a big fuzz guy; I am very happy with the "clean" (it's not actually clean, but definitely not fuzzed up) tone I get without the OD running. I'll hit that pedal under solos if it gets sounding too thin since we don't have a second guitarist.

just been playing around with my new WH swollen pickle... that thing is a MONSTER. it took me about 2 hours to settle on a tone i like.

I think half the problem is I use the vt bass for a better tone thru my 15'' 100w, and the pickle is so damn bassy that it took heaps of fiddling to get something that the speaker could cope with. Still bad ass but its definitely a FUZZY fuzz.

the internal knobs made a big difference, has anyone else had a similar situation? ie. running a vt bass AND a pickle? and if so any setting recommendations for me? (I know i need a bigger amp..)

First thing, scrap the DS-1. Second, you'll want to set the sansamp up for a dirty SVT sound. Third, get some fuzz - I prefer the Bluebeard but the Oxfuzz Bass Fuzz is awesome and it's hard to go wrong with an old Big Muff...there are many versions out there and most of them are pretty good. Beyond fuzz, it's all up to you. There's a lot of filter and wah sounds on bass, some modulation but mostly just fuzz.

Back in my days of playing metal in the 90's, the green russian big muff was my bread and butter for getting the ultimate bass-rumbling COLORFUL ADJECTIVE HERE fuzz tone. It would just destroy everything in the best way possible. I remember seeing it on Dave Edwardson's board from Neurosis during the Times of Grace tour. It didn't suprise me one bit that it was there. That was THE pedal, and there was no other that could hold onto the bottom end as well as that one.

Long story short, moved from east to west coast, green russian is MIA at the folk's house. Five years go by and although i wasn't too interested in playing metal anymore, I still needed to hear that perfect bass fuzz again. Finally got the Wren & Cuff Tall Font Russian a month ago. And they NAILED IT! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: It sounds big and scary, just like it should.
I was such a happy boy.

Basically a Green Russian Big Muff remake (read: massive modern improvement).

It is Black Sabbath (Master of Reality) in a box. With the Tone knob, you can fizz it out pretty well if you like; and with the blend knob you can accentuate some more punch.

I'm not super into Doom Metal, but whenever I turn that pedal on my fingers slow down and my ripping Speed Metal riffs become dark, moody, and DEVASTATING!

Seriously, it is a very well made pedal, and one I doubt will ever leave my board. Retains all the low frequencies. Sounds best through (and was designed specifically for) an amp, both solid state and tube, but can be dialed in to work well direct into a board.

I think the reason why it works so well for slow, crushing doom is that the tone evolves so much between the attack and decay that you end up wanting to give it time to crawl a bit before hitting your next note. It's the ultimate enabler. As long as it's around, you'll never stop playing doom.

Dave's apparently using Fuzzrocious products these days (the site lists the Grey Stache and the Rat Tail). I'm sure he's probably still recording with the old Green Russian though! That's one of those bands where they sound awesome recorded but you REALLY have to see them live to believe it!

Yeah, i saw them a couple months ago and took a peek to see if it was still there. It wasn't. In the quick upside-down glance I had it looked like might have changed his setup so that 3 different fuzz pedals were fuzzing out different parts of his frequency spectrum in parallel. I think he may have actually labeled them Hi, Mid and Low. Tri-fuzzing?

my list would be kinda like this.

Fuzzes:
Bluebeard (real thick... once I started using one, every band we played with it seemed wanted to know what it was)
Wren and Cuff Tall Font.. (super doomy dark doom of doomyness)
Fender Sublime (very versatile, from smooth to total fuzzout and it ALL sounds GOOD!)
OxFuzz Bass (on passive this is a fuzz sound to give you permagrin.. on active its one of the best ODs)
Team Awesome Fuzz Machine (if you only want one fuzz, this will cover everything)
Musket Fuzz ( impressive little box, but takes a little time to dial in)
Supercollider (I am super, hear me roar!)

ODs:
Oxfuzz Bass (dialed back into OD territory if you use an Active)
Fuzzrocious Kaeden (jooooooooceeeeeeee!)
Fuzzrocisous Dark Driving (real nice edgeyness)
SFT (I love this for breaks that need drivin throbbin bass grit)
Pork Loin (smooooooth)
Id like to try the B3k.. but ......

and maybe some reverb here and there.

I'll second the Bluebeard. On the Oxfuzz Bass Fuzz, you really have to tweak the internal trim pot a bit. With the active Spector (EMG PJ pickups & BT pre), the Oxfuzz sounds absolutely violent. It lacks sustain but the initial shear brutality up-front with the blend and fuzz knobs dimed (and the internal trim pot being somewhere close to full clockwise) is amazing.
