DEBORAH DUNHAM - was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for ten years before she moved to the Boston area in 1997. There she performed with the Boston Symphony and Pops Orchestras and served as a principal bassist for Boston Baroque, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Emmanuel Music, Boston Musica Viva, Cantata Singers, The Handel and Haydn Society, Collage New Music and the Dinosaur Annex Music Ensemble. As principal bassist with Boston Baroque, she also recorded for Telarc Records. She commissioned and performed several works for the double bass, most recently Chant by Sheila Silver, and recorded twentieth century music for New Albion and Mode records. She was also the bassist in the Eastman Chamber Ensemble when it recorded with Jan DeGaetani for the Bridge compact disc "Jan De Gaetani Sings Berlioz and Mahler" which received a Grammy Award nomination in 1991.

Ms. Dunham has appeared at many American music festivals including Aspen, Tanglewood, the Grand Teton Festival, Kent/Blossom, Bay Chamber Concerts, Mainly Mozart, Musicorda, Bowdoin, and the Portland Chamber Music Festival.

In addition, she has played annually as principal bass at the Festival der Zukunft in Switzerland since 1993 and was a guest artist in 1997 at the contemporary music festival Musicarama in Hong Kong. Deborah Dunham moved to Houston in 2001 with her husband, violist James Dunham. She is currently enrolled in the doctorate program at the Shepherd School of Music and performs as an extra for the Houston Symphony Orchestra.

You can't see her very well but here is my friend Wanda Ortiz who is the principal bassist in the South Coast Symphony and also plays in the Culver City and Marina del Rey orchestras. She is also on electric in her gig with The Iron Maidens.

A very busy, excellent player, and one of the nicest human beings I know.

This is Laura Bohle of Chicago. During WW2 she kind of got relegated to entertaining the troops but she was supposed to be one of the best and maybe even the best bassist on the USO tour circuit. She was classically trained and recommended to the Rochester Philharmonic. Her bow work was supposed to be impeccable and she could walk with the best of them. Unfortunately, I can't find any recordings of her to verify this. She may be on some of the old V-discs but I don't know which ones. Can anybody help?

Here in the US it is less and less rare. As I look at top high school and university programs, it is becoming quite common to see woman playing the instrument and playing it very well. Height and hand size doesn't seem to matter at all.

I got to meet Linda Oh in college. I'm probably ~14" taller than her, but she got around on the instrument far better than I could, and she was using my bass . She got a nice big sound out of it, too, as I recall.

I just discovered a lady from Japan, KURENA ISHIKAWA. She sings and plays DB. Anyone heard of her? She seems new on the scene and rather obscure but I find her playing and singing delightful. Apparently "discovered" by Makoto Ozone and recently released a debut album (from what I can tell only in Japan) called "Kurena". I saw she was briefly discussed on the BG side of the forum. Here is the first video I saw of her (Michael Jackson's Off The Wall) but there are a couple of others.
