Doubler question. Using two amps / one cab

(a) You absolutely do not want to connect two amps to one cab without a switcher like that, because otherwise you risk blowing up both amps and the cab.
(b) AFAIK there are no switchers like that that have Speakons.
 
What i would like to have is an A/B box between the amps, so both basses can stay connected (to their amps) all the time. Im tired of switching cables. Two inputs for the amps, one output to the cab and one switch only. The radial box is a bit too complicated (and pricey), not really what im after. Well the search goes on.

It is not complicated, it has only one switch and no knobs. It may cost more than you want to spend, but that may be your tough luck. What may not be obvious is that you can't just have a simple switch in a box, because the moment you switch between heads, there will be a loud pop through the speakers, that could damage them. Also if one or both of the heads have output transformers (like most tube amps), the moment the switch actuates there will be a major shift in the loading on the amp, that could damage it. That's why the Radial has the more complex internal switching system they describe.

So you need a device that is "exactly as complicated" as the Radial, but you want to find one that costs less and has Speakons.

If he makes sure the switch is "break before make" that won't happen. It has to be rated at 100V or more as well.

I don't think there is much danger of a speaker thump, anyway. That happens sometimes with instrument switches because the switching dumps stray capacitance into the input of a high gain amplifier; it's the amp itself that makes the thump. As long as the outputs of the two amps are never connected and he doesn't hit the switch while he is playing I don't see a problem with a simple switch.
 
You don't want to pay the price and you don't want to swap cables...

If you don't know how to build a unit to accomplish this, you're going to have to buy one.
Since you are not actually asking for something that is common enough to be a boss/digitech product, you're going to have to pay for something that can handle much higher voltages than a looper pedal, w/ either buffers, gates, or both.
 
Why two amps?

Seems to me that it would be much cheaper to use one or two preamps to tailor the tone and output of each instrument and run that into an A/B box into a single amp.

I just use a two channel bass amp, myself.
 
Are both amps absolutely necessary?
Could you make it happen with one?

Of course i can live with just one amp ( i have done that for quite some time ) But since i have one amp that i really like for my upright, and one that i really like for my electric...i thought it would be nice to use em both. Since there is a lot of equipment to carry as it is, it would be fine if i could use em both on just one cab. I dont now...it seems to me now that its more difficult than i thought. I think maybe the bass switch could be an option.
