I once read an interview of Carlos Santana in which he told the interviewer that the band bought the whole equipment in the early days. So it is likely that the modified Jazz Bass was just band equipment (just for whoever played in that band to use)...

I found it from moonflowercafe.com. It's from "Love Devotion Surrender" sessions 1972.

About the bass being owned by Santana band: Rauch played the very same bass during his tour with David Bowie in late 1974.

Cool, I wonder if he used that for the Lenny White and Billy Cobham stints. It sounds like the same bass from the studio recordings. Maybe he could dial in his tone on just about any bass.

I remember seeing Santana in '74 after Doug left (what a let down, nothing against D. Brown, but I would have been disappointed no matter who came in ) I think David Brown was using a sunburst P bass in 74.

I think I'm going to download Billy Cobham's Life and Times CD. Raunch sounds so Seventies but he definitely had the modern technique!

Im glad we are keeping his spirit alive. Would love to read a multi paged article of this amazing bassist. I think about him often and just wish we knew more.

I was jamming with 'Lotus' the other day. Definitely Santana's finest period was with Doug IMHO.

Since I picked up on this thread, I grabbed Lenny Whites record with DR, and next will be the Cobham one.

Amazing player, still inspiring in 2012.

"when I look into your eyes" on Santana's Welcome LP is my all time favorite song to date because of Doug's contribution. He left too soon
