Down to one

You compared someone who uses a lot of effects to an ugly girl who uses too much makeup.

DAMN, I about spit out my drink reading that. Too funny. I guess when you break it down like that, I see your point. Again, wasn't my intention to call anybody an ugly girl w/ too much make up.

I must say that, yes, there is a hint of trolling when you come into the EFFECTS portion of the forum, and tell someone they don't need effects.

Go on over the double-bass side and casually mention how electric guitars have obviated acoustic uprights and tell me that wouldn't be taken as trolling.

Point taken.

My apologies to all. Carry on

My "down to one" solution has been a Boss GT-10B.

Admittedly, it's one device that's as large as a pedalboard, but I've found that it works like a single pedal in the sense that it takes one outlet, and one cord plugs into it and one out of it.

There are a million flashy things you can do with it, but it happens to work pretty well as a preamp for me. I occasionally use the effects, but the main utility for me is having a good clean tone, a good dirty tone, and a good acoustic tone all available at a toe click.

I don't agree. No effects is a perfectly valid effects option. Why should only this option be off limits to discussion? There is a difference between discussing the pros and cons of not having any effects and actually insulting people who use effects.

It's the difference between saying "I don't use a pick because I don't like the sound and I don't have to worry about losing picks", or "have you considered learning a style that doesn't use a pick", as opposed to "People who use picks are morons who are not real bass players".

Wouldn't atheism be appropriate to discuss in a forum about world religions?

Wouldn't zero be appropriate to discuss in a forum about integers?

I would say that if I had to go down to just one pedal, I'd want it to be a Darkglass B7K. I haven't even played the thing, but it seems like everything you'd need for grit in a band situation.

I don't fool myself. When I've played with other people, I look down at my pedal board and think "man I want to click just one of these on", but it doesn't seem to fit in the genres of music that my friends like. I can see both sides of the coin. I love industrial music and would prefer to play something similar to that, so fuzz is a must. FUZZ is teh sexy. On the other hand, my cousin and I have been playing together and he wants to play Brad Paisley and other country bands. Yea...doesn't really fit. I HATE country, but it's actually kind of fun to play every once in awhile.

Yes, no effects is a valid option. So is not building my own bass, and I don't have to go into the luthier's corner to declare so, as that adds nothing worthwhile to the pertinent discussion. Everyone is entitled to an opinion; that does not mean that opinion must be stated in defiance.

Wouldn't it be appropriate for the God Hates Fags people to protest a military funeral?

OK, that's a little extreme ;)

Off-Topic Legal Note: At least one US Federal Court has declared Atheism a religion and under the protection of the First Admendment.

I don't know if I could go down to just one. I have at least three different ONE pedals I like.

Jimmy posted that he had reduced his pedals down to one. I suggested that he could go to zero, and what the advantages might be. That's pertinent to the discussion. It's not trolling or insulting anyone, nor is it being defiant. It's offering a suggestion.

Jimmy said that no, he needed and liked that one pedal. I didn't argue with him, or insult him for his preference.

But I am being defiant with folks who tell me "How dare I suggest not using effects in the effects forum!".

If someone posted a thread "Should I build a bass?" in the Luthier's corner forum, suggesting not building a bass and the advantages of that could be entirely pertinent and appropriate.

And yeah, if I had said "God Hates Bass Players that Use Effects", that would be insulting and not appropriate.

Perhaps suggesting the use of no effects within an effects forum could be construed as a bit presumptuous, if not antagonistic. Speaking only for myself, I appreciate your clarification that you meant no offense, but understand we here in the effects forum have suffered the arrogance of 'purists' suggesting the use of effects as an unnecessary crutch to poor skill. Which is both insulting and unimaginative.

I LOVE the sound of my bass, clean and amplified through flat bandwidth mixer/headphones with no effects. As such, I also LOVE the way my bass sounds through a myriad of effects, amps and speakers. Like my sound; plus...more.

The thread is: 'down to one', not 'down to none'.

Jimmy is asking if anyone wants to use him in a band that requires effects so that he can use the effects he has come to enjoy. He clearly wants to use his effects. Suggesting he scrub the idea and go effect-less is less than helpful.

I hope you can see that.

I'm experiencing quite the opposite. I was never a big effects guy, except chorus, which I've always loved. However, chorus is definitely something to be used tastefully, else everything you play automatically starts sounding cheesy. :D

I'm in the process of putting together a pedal board, because there are tunes that I'm playing that would benefit from certain effects. Primarily, I'm going to be using a Fishman Fission due to being in a single guitar band. I'm going to use it sparingly (i.e., tunes with thick rhythm guitar under the solo in which I can't necessarily play "more busy"). Even shopping for deals, between the board, pedals, cabling, and power, I'm probably going to have about the same amount invested in this as a decent bass or amp. Of course, part of that is because I'm going a little more boutique-y with the pedal board (i.e., Blackbird), because I want something very self-contained and has locking jacks rather than plugging straight into a pedal (very easy to kick a cable out of a pedal jack on stage). I'm also a tone freak, and I'm taking careful consideration with things like loopers and buffers to ensure I don't get a giant tone suck.

However, nothing going on my board is all that exotic. It's all stuff that can be used in future bands and projects, so I don't feel so bad on not getting a decent ROI.

I did score a VT Deluxe recently, and I am VERY excited about that pedal. I've never played through one, but I've been very impressed with just about every clip I've heard of one. I never cared much for the bass drivers, but this seems like something with a lot of uses. I'm going to be using a VT with a Mesa 400+. it's like smoking with the patch on whilst chewing Nicorette gum. :D
