Down to one

One should own as many pedals as they wish to have fun with. If a certain gig only needs 3 of the 300 pedals you own, then you just pack those three. The world of a musician can be fast-paced and ever-changing. Next week, you find a kazoo/trumpet player, an accordion player and percussionist with a 30-piece set of hand percussion for that new band that will take you heights even greater than Cake and Jane Jane Pollock.

...I am down to 2, Jimmy: Line 6 Bass Pod and Korg Pandora. Yeah; it's only 2 boxes but litterally hundreds of features and options. I agree that these offer only tuning and "emulations" ; some far from duplicating that actual sound or tone, but this way I can experiment to my heart's delight..at home.. and only use what is actually required at a gig.

Hindsight being 20-20 I didn't know about the "floor pods" when I got my Line 6 butter bean, or I would be down to 1. Advantage being the audio-aux-in feature on floor units VS butter beans. The Pandora has nearly all of that, plus audio-aux-in, as well as drum patterns and looping capabilities. I love both and I'm keeping both.

That's funny. My same setup as well.

So now that you are down to one, why not just eliminate that one and go to none? Now you've eliminated a piece you have to carry and tote and keep track of. You've eliminated an extra patch and power cable. Less things to go wrong. Just get a clip on tuner you can keep in your case with your strap and you are set to go.

I know pedals are fun. So are hookers and cocaine. But there are a lot of advantages to not doing those, either.

Pedals are cheaper than amps. What if you don't like the preamp section of your amp? Solution: pedals. I often bypass my GK's preamp section and run my pedal board into the FX return. Nothing against GK, but I prefer the sound of my Barber Linden EQ as a preamp.

G4string and DBCrocky, thank you for your input, but not only do I disagree 100% about pedals on bass, I'm thinking that going into the effects forum to tell people not to use effects is like wearing a KKK robe to go to a Snoop Dogg concert. It's just not going to turn out well.

Anyway, yeah, I could get rid of the VTD, but how would I switch between upright and electric and be able to EQ each separately? And what happens when I'm on the road and the SVT/810 on my rider gets changed to a Behringer combo or something equally repulsive to SVT lovers? And how would I get overdrive without using an amp that's way too loud for the band? Even a B-15 cranked hard is too much for my band.

The VTD stays.

1. Not trying to insult anyone.

2. Surely not trying to insult using effects.

3. Just trying to present another option.

4. Trying to work in a cocaine and hookers joke.

5. Eliminating pedals doesn't mean eliminating effects. There are plenty of effects and switches that come in packages that are not pedals.

That is all.

I'm pretty much in the same boat, though I never really had any illusions of really using all my fun filters, octaves, etc with any of the bands I play with currently. Here's what I bring to gigs:

And here are all my toys to play with at home. Just because I don't use them live, doesn't make them any less fun :bassist:

I even have a couple more filters sitting in boxes that I rotate into use.

I don't have any problems with this situation.

Surely that OCD and POG could squeeze onto your gig board?;)

On bands with more than one bassist: Um Volta do Mar had 2 bass players and they were pretty sweet.. not sure they're together anymore.

a band with 4 basses sounds like an amazing idea

My lady friend came up with a good name for an all bass guitar band, and insists I share it with you all.

CLEF PALETTE
:bassist::bassist::bassist::bassist:

heh heh,

I keep looking at my board (11 pedals) and wondering how I can downsize... to make room for more pedals I guess ... Actually, I ask myself often which effects I can live without... phaser and chorus seem to top that list, but I still use them when I'm messing around, and they do make me happy. I don't really see using them in a band context (at least for the stuff I'm doing now), but they are fun to play with.

I suppose I could get away with only using an eq and drive pedal (Submarine and B3K), but damn I love the muff, and the gated fuzz, and the delay, and the filter... (sigh) it is an illness, but it makes me feel good.

waaaaay better (and healthier) than hookers and blow.

Sure, I could fit some fun pedals on my gig board, but with my current band I'd never use them, so there's no real point.

It actually works out kind of nice as is, because a lot of pedals on the effects board are nice for guitar too. So I end up having a tone shaping board for both guitar and bass and swapping that effects board in front of either of those when I want to play around.

For those of you who can't seem to crap on our lawn fast enough, the following is from the effects forum rules:

Not crapping on anybody's yard....def not trolling. Just stating my opinion. This after all is TALKBASS, not "I-have-to-agree/liking-using-pedals-because-I'm-in-the-pedal-forum-bass":rollno: Where is the juxtaposition? Is that not allowed? Or is everything posted that isn't pro-effects just hastily construed as being insulting towards the use of effects. Heaven forbid if somebody else dislikes effects:eek:. Jeesh' people, grow some thicker skin. Were only talking about bass guitars and pedals here. Just trying to have a little fun, state at a viewpoint. Nobody is insulting anybody, calling names, etc. Relax. Surely, I am certain some of you have thicker skin in real life than on this board.

LOL;) I get it Jimmy, and I agree with your point. I like the KKK/Snoop-Dog analogy. Funny!! But be careful, I offended some of my TB brethren just by posting a comment that was construed as anti-effects in the effects forum, OMG! You used the words KKK and Snoop Dog in the effects forum. Some people might find that offensive too. Gotta be careful these days, you never know who you're gonna offend. One day you're posting a harmless post on TB, the next day Gloria Allred is getting ready to burn your house down because your "offensive" comment inflicted unnecessary irreversible emotional distress on her client.

You compared someone who uses a lot of effects to an ugly girl who uses too much makeup.

I must say that, yes, there is a hint of trolling when you come into the EFFECTS portion of the forum, and tell someone they don't need effects.

Go on over the double-bass side and casually mention how electric guitars have obviated acoustic uprights and tell me that wouldn't be taken as trolling.
